For almost two centuries, Marosjára’s (Iara de Mureş, Romania) tradition of making plum jam has been kept alive, with locals still preparing it from homegrown plums using age-old recipes, plenty of care, and a dash of heart. This September 20-21, the town invites everyone to its 13th Plum Jam Festival, where you can sample, buy, and take home not only the legendary jam but also a variety of other delicious local products.
Jam, Markets, and More
The annual two-day festival is a vibrant celebration designed to preserve and showcase living Transylvanian traditions centered around the plum. Expect a lively crafts market where local artisans and producers offer everything from jewelry and crocheted toys to skirts, freshly baked bread, cured meats, fruit juices, honey cakes, honey, salty treats from Parajd (Praid), potted plants, candles, soaps, vegetables, cheese tastings, and more.
Two Days Packed with Fun
The schedule is bursting with things to do: a brass band at the opening, folk dance shows, evening concerts featuring Pittyes Kettes and IarmaRock DP, and a big campfire. Sunday starts with a bike race and a marathon for all ages, statue unveiling, music, more dancing, and acts like Nagy Orsolya and Mel’amour. Festivities run from 10 am to 8 pm both days—don’t miss out!
