The Budapest Botanical Garden (Füvészkert) transforms from September 12 to 14, 2025, as it hosts Hungary’s National Autumn Cactus and Succulent Exhibition and Fair. This epic event showcases ancient, massive cacti and succulent giants—rare specimens often hidden away in private collections, many cultivated for decades, some even grown from seed.
The Giants On Display
Visitors will spot impressive columnar and spherical cacti, clusters of mini-cacti, and quirky succulents that resemble tiny shrubs. Bringing these huge, mature plants out into the open is a rarity—most are simply too big and awkward to move. But here’s your chance to stare in awe at these “youngsters,” who, despite being cared for by hobbyists for 20–50 years, are mere children compared to their wild, hundred-year-old relatives. Take a closer look at their unique shapes, spines, and woody, aged stems—proof of years of devoted care, often on sunny windowsills or in makeshift greenhouses.
More Than Just Looking
Collectors will display blooming beauties, and visitors can buy unique plants, special cactus soil, and swap cultivation tips. Kids can unleash their creativity at the handicraft corner, while adults relax in the garden’s café or sample local street food, enjoying late summer’s burst of color.
Event Details
The official opening, led by the garden’s director, László Papp Jr. (Papp László if you prefer Hungarian), is on September 13 at 11am. Hours: Friday/Saturday 9am–5pm, Sunday 9am–4pm.
