Zalakaros keeps the winter magic alive: the ice rink on Karos Promenade (Karos Korzó) stays open until January 31, 2026. Lights up, ice sparkling, and the slip-and-giggle season rolls on. Come as a pro or a first-timer, in a glittery beanie, a Christmas sweater, or with a “just watching today” look—you’ll still end up taking a lap. Hot drinks are on the way, the lights are warming up, and they’re ready to welcome you!

Pros
+
Affordable fun by U.S. standards—adult tickets under $7 and cheap skate rentals make it easy on the wallet
+
Family-friendly vibe with big rink, Advent events, concerts, and cute penguin aids for kids and beginners
+
Open daily with long weekend hours, so you can fit it around a Hungary itinerary
+
No Hungarian needed—simple ticketing, universal rink etiquette, and staff at a touristy promenade
+
Easy to reach by car if you’re road-tripping western Hungary; plenty of parking in spa-town areas like Zalakaros
+
Rink size is generous for a town venue, so fewer bottlenecks and room to glide even for first-timers
+
Unique winter add-on to Zalakaros’s famous thermal spas—skate, then soak, which you won’t find at most U.S. rinks
Cons
–
Zalakaros isn’t widely known to U.S. tourists compared with Budapest or Lake Balaton hotspots
–
Public transport from Budapest involves a train-plus-bus combo and 3–4 hours each way, not ideal for a quick day trip
–
International name recognition of the rink/event is low, so don’t expect big-show production or themed spectacles like major European Christmas rinks
–
Occasional 20-minute maintenance breaks 2–3 times daily can interrupt momentum, especially with kids in tow
