Gyomaendrőd lines up a full year of festivals, concerts, exhibitions, talks, and community gatherings across multiple venues, offering something for every age and taste. From science and swing to starry nights and street food, the city sets the stage for family downtime and cultural recharge all year long.
April: Poetry, Parenting in the Digital Age, and Spring Icons
April 21–22 kicks off with the Határ Győző City Recitation Contest at the Határ Győző City Library. On April 23, psychologist and popular speaker Dániel Tóth, known as “Pszichológus Pasi,” dives into Digital Education A–Z: net, games, gadgets, AI at the Ferenc Kállai Integrated Cultural Institution and Community Center. Craft lovers get their fix at the Mother’s Day Handicraft Fair on April 24 at the Körös Visitor Center. On April 25, the 23rd Gyomaendrőd Scientific Conference explores Spring Cult: the symbol and phenomenon of spring in culture at St. Anthony Community House (Szent Antal). April 26 brings a literary-leaning verse concert, How much is a thought worth…? with Budapest’s Strófa Trio at OMart Bookstore and Cultural Workshop.
May: Cheese, Stories, and Swing
From April 30 to May 2, Liberty Square (Szabadság tér) hosts the 27th Gyomaendrőd International Cheese and Curd Festival, a staple for foodies. The Határ Győző City Library opens the SZÖVEGELŐ diorama exhibition on May 6. The National Animal and Flea Market returns May 10. On May 11, actor Barbara Hegyi brings Stories from My Kitchen, or Barbara, stand up!—a personal, humorous, and emotional evening inspired by her Park Publishing cookbooks, filled with family memories, shared tables, cooking, and festive moments. May 16 goes literary again with In the footsteps of Ferenc Móra, a roaming talk by literary historian Dr. Tamás Bíró-Balogh at OMart. The 48th City “Cibere” Children’s Day lands May 23 at the Besenyszeg Playground. On May 28, Kamilka & Pesti Sikk revive Hollywood’s golden musical glow and Hungary’s chic swing era, led by lyricist-singer Kamilka Kiss and two-time Fonogram-winning composer-pianist Ádám Lőrincz. OMart Musical Summer launches May 30 with The 25-year-old Vox Humana Mixed Choir of Dévaványa in concert. May wraps on the 31st with Heroes’ Day at Heroes’ Square.
June: Pots, Choirs, and Fire Jumps
June 4 marks the Day of National Unity at Liberty Square (Szabadság tér) at the National Flag. June 6 serves up the 22nd Cauldron Day next to the Rózsahegyi House. OMart Musical Summer 2 features the band Natural Intelligence (Természetes Intelligencia) on June 13, while St. Anthony’s Day is celebrated the same day at the St. Anthony Bakehouse (Szent Antal). The National Animal and Flea Market returns June 14. The Határ Győző Library hosts a Children’s Program on June 23 and a Baby Program on June 25. On June 27, OMart Musical Summer 3 presents the 3rd Elisabeth Concert with the Gyomaendrőd Music Friends Chamber Choir, plus the opening of an exhibition of paintings by Lillis Boros and Netti Boros. Cap the night with St. John’s Night fire-jumping at the Csicsergő kayak stop and fishing lodge. June 29 commemorates the Day of Persecution of Kulaks at Heroes’ Square.
July: Riverside Nights and Summer Song
Riverside Evenings (Körösparti Esték) bring music to Elisabeth Grove (Erzsébet-liget) on July 4, 11, and 18. OMart Musical Summer 4 adds We fly on our heart’s spring, a recital by Zoltán Kiszely and Nicolette Merényi on July 11. The National Animal and Flea Market sets up July 12. On July 25, OMart Musical Summer 5 heats up with Summer, tango, love: a violin evening by Kende Paraizs.
August: Beetles, Shooting Stars, and Heritage
From July 31 to August 3, the 30th Gyomaendrőd Volkswagen Beetle and Bus Party rolls into the Gyomaendrőd Liget Spa and Camping. August 7 brings the 11th Night of Shooting Stars—on the meadow and on the water, branded Night of Wishes: free meteor-watching on the meadow with an outdoor film screening and a telescope, plus, for an extra fee, a stargazing night boat tour on the Triple Körös (Hármas-Körös). The buffet stays open throughout. The National Animal and Flea Market returns August 9. OMart Musical Summer 6 on August 15 spotlights An evening in the spinning room with the Vésztő Spinning Room women’s zither ensemble (Vésztői Fonó). August 20 celebrates King Saint Stephen and the Feast of the New Bread in Elisabeth Grove (Erzsébet-liget), followed August 21 by the 28th Gyomaendrőd International Fish Cooking Competition in the same spot. On August 22, spiritual teacher László Ambrusz gives a talk: The physical, mental, and spiritual causes of our illnesses at OMart. August 28 marks the 500th anniversary Memorial Day of the Battle of Mohács.
September: Plums, Prints, and Artists at Work
St. Anthony Community House (Szent Antal) hosts the 10th Plum Jam Cooking Day on September 5. The Határ Győző Library’s Late Summer Evening—music program lands September 8. On September 12, OMart opens an exhibition of Bella Rózsa’s etchings, and Dr. Béla Kovács presents Endrőd history in the 10th Neighborly Gathering: A late descendant sees nothing… The National Animal and Flea Market returns September 13. From September 21–26, the 19th Gyomaendrőd László Holló Artists’ Camp settles into St. Anthony Community House. OMart Musical Summer 7 closes the month September 26 with the Regélő Fehér Táltos traditionalist drum ensemble.
October: Tales, Memory Days, and Ghana Revisited
October 5 is the Day of Folk Tales at the Határ Győző Library. October 6 honors the Memorial Day of the Martyrs of Arad at the Ferenc Kállai Cultural Center. On October 10, OMart hosts The Little Girl and the Scarecrow, introducing children’s author Zsuzsanna Garay for the Day of the Hungarian Folk Tale. The National Animal and Flea Market returns October 11. October 17 brings Autumn Exhibition—Pumpkin Carving Family Day at the Béla Vidovszky City Gallery. On October 20, OMart repeats the in-demand GHANA travelogue: From the machete to the smartphone. October 23 marks the National Holiday commemorating the 1956 Revolution at the Ferenc Kállai Cultural Center, followed October 24 by the Confucius Institute Conference at St. Anthony Community House.
November–December: History, Markets, and Music
The National Animal and Flea Market sets up November 8. On November 13, OMart’s 4th history class, Chance for freedom? with Albert Molnár, tackles 1956. The Határ Győző Library hosts Getting ready our way—Advent fair on November 20. November 21 fires up the 17th Gyomaendrőd Pork Feast and János Tímár Butcher’s Pálinka Memorial Contest at the Lajos Varga Sports Hall. Advent Tuning follows on November 24 at the library. OMart opens an exhibition of children’s drawing contest entries on November 28. December 12 wraps the cultural year with Pictures at an Exhibition—Mihály Demeniv, Concorde Talent Award-winning accordionist, and friends at OMart. The National Animal and Flea Market makes its final appearance December 13.
