April Kickoff
April explodes with poetry and art. On April 11, catch “The Spinning Sound Hums in the Grass” for Poetry Day, featuring the Győri Hangraforgó verse-singing band at OMart Bookstore and Cultural Workshop. From April 7-11, the “Dreaming of Rivers” exhibition runs at Vidovszky Béla City Gallery, alongside the World Water Day youth art contest “Dreaming of Waters.” The national animal and flea market takes place on April 12. April 14 marks Holocaust Remembrance Day for Hungarian Victims, with the opening of the Debrecen Jewish Quarter Art Colony exhibit by Heller Zsolt from the Debrecen Jewish Cultural and Scientific Research Institute, plus Dr. István Szonda’s talk on famous Jews from Endrőd. Exhibitions continue from April 14-17. On April 16, Kamarás Iván reimagines hits from R-GO, Edda, Tankcsapda, Valmar, Magna Cum Laude, Wellhello, Azariah, and more in “The Poetry (Not) Day.” On April 21-22, the Határ Győző City Poetry Recitation Competition takes place at the library. Meet author Baráth Viktória on April 22 – she started writing for fun and now shares secrets from her books published by Álomgyár Kiadó. The 23rd Gyomaendrőd Ethnography Conference takes place on April 25 at Szent Antal Community House, followed by Dr. Katalin Farkas Smiri’s photo exhibit opening and a poetry concert “How Much is a Thought Worth?” with Budapest’s Strófa trio on April 26, both at OMart.
May Festivities
May starts with the 27th International Cheese and Curd Festival from April 30 to May 2 at Freedom Square. The SZÖVEGELŐ diorama exhibit is on May 6 at the library; animal market on May 10. Hegyi Barbara’s stand-up “Stories from My Kitchen, or Barbara, Stand Up!” on May 11 dives into family meals and holidays from her recipe books. On May 16, explore “In Ferenc Móra’s Footsteps” with historian Dr. Tamás Bíró-Balogh at OMart. Kids’ Day “Cibere” is on May 23 at Besenyszegi playground. Kamilka & Pesti Sikk swing into Hollywood glamour and the Hungarian swing era on May 28. Vox Humana Mixed Choir’s 25th anniversary concert kicks off OMart Musical Summer on May 30. Heroes’ Day on May 31 at Heroes’ Square.
June River Vibes
National Togetherness Day on June 4 at Freedom Square flagpole. 22nd Goulash Day on June 6 near Rózsahegyi House. St. Anthony’s Day on June 13 at the bakery, plus Természetes Intelligencia band at OMart. Animal market on June 14. Library kids’ program on June 23; baby program on June 25. Exhibition of paintings by Boros Lillis and Boros Netti opens on June 27 at OMart, same day as St. John’s Night bonfire-jumping at Csicsergő canoe stop and fishing spot, and the III.
