Gyula, the historic spa town with a castle at its heart, has packed 2026 with festivals, concerts, guided walks, spirited tastings, night spa sessions, and candlelit tours. Events pop up citywide around Gyula Castle (Gyulai Vár), the charming downtown, and the famed Castle Spa (Gyulai Várfürdő). Bookmark these dates and dive in. Location: 5700 Gyula, multiple venues.
Week of May 19–25: Theater, tastings, and rivers
May kicks off with Almásy Castle’s “Fűző és forradalom” (Corset and Revolution), an exhibition-meets-experience that threads history through fashion, returning throughout the season. The city’s cultural hub lines up the Mandala Musical Theatre’s “Hyppolit, a lakáj” (Hyppolit, the Butler) as a lively musical comedy, while “Latinovits 50” lands as an evening honoring a legend. At Ladics House, “Császárné csészéje” (The Empress’s Cup) opens the door to a bourgeois family home frozen in time, recurring through late May and June.
Beer fans get “Sörházi beugró” at Elixbeer Brewery: behind-the-scenes tours and tastings run through the week. On May 21, “Széllelbélelt és komoly históriák” blends an unorthodox book launch with historical stand-up. From May 22–24, Gyula goes all-in on pálinka: Pálinka Sauna Days steam up the Castle Spa (Gyulai Várfürdő), while the Gyula Pálinka Festival (Gyulai Pálinkafesztivál) takes over town with tastings, music, and food. Guaranteed programs at Gyula Castle run the same weekend, from living history to guided sessions.
On May 22 and 23, guided paddling tours slip along the Old White Körös (Ó-Fehér-Körös) through downtown. “Belvárosi barangoló” city walks return May 22 and 29. La Sposa Caffè hosts “A mesék varázsa” (The Magic of Tales) with Petra Sándor on May 22, then a May brunch on the 23rd. The 23rd is stacked: “Grófi passziók – The Treasures of Almásy Castle” digs into aristocratic pastimes; “A kastély gyertyafényben” (The Castle by Candlelight) and “Gyertyafényes vártúrák” (Candlelit Castle Tours) glow after sunset; and the Castle Spa runs an “Éjszakai wellness” (Night Wellness) session.
Late May: Pageants and legends
May 24 brings “Kastélytúra Tacskó Döncivel” (Castle Tour with Dönci the Dachshund), a family-favorite character-led wander, returning several Sundays in June. Whit Monday, May 25, crowns a local tradition with Gyula Castle’s “Pünkösdi királyválasztás 2026” (Whitsun King Election). On May 26, Hungarian icon Zsuzsa Koncz performs under the Gyulakult banner, while the brewery tastings and the corset exhibit continue. May 27 folds in a Museum Open University talk: “A fűzőtől a bubifrizuráig” (From Corsets to the Bob Cut), plus a candid evening at La Sposa Caffè: “Szókimondás felsőfokon” with Zoltán Mucsi. EDÜ – Erkel Student Celebrations 2026 (May 28–30) fills the city with youth arts and performances.
The May 29–31 slate bundles castle programs, more paddling and city walks, and a downtown Portéka market of artisans and producers by the World Clock on May 30. The same day hits hard: “Beszédes virágok” (Speaking Flowers) explores Almásy Castle’s treasures; repeat candlelit castle tours and night wellness; plus Gyula Castle’s “A végzet mezeje – Mohács” (The Field of Doom – Mohács), spotlighting the fateful 1526 battle. May 31 is for families: City Children’s Day (Városi Gyermeknap), alongside more Empress’s Cup tours and another dachshund-led castle ramble.
June opens: History, bread, sushi, and salons
June 2 brings a lecture at Mogyoróssy János City Library: “Mohácsról Gyulán” – a 500-year-old battle remembered in Békés County. Throughout early June, the corset exhibit and the Ladics House program keep pace. June 5–7 reinstates guaranteed castle programs. On June 6, “Pincetárlat” (Cellar Exhibit) reveals hidden treasures; “elPÉKesztő,” a hands-on sourdough workshop at Almásy Castle, serves bakers; the Portéka market returns to the World Clock; the Castle Spa offers another Night Wellness; and Egy Pillanat Caffè hosts a Sushi Night. Candlelit tours and “A kastély gyertyafényben” continue weaving magic after dark.
June 10 launches the Women’s Literary Café at Almásy: “Láthatatlan fűzők” (Invisible Corsets), a talk series opening up women’s voices and histories. Theater returns June 11 with Liliom Produkció’s “Meztelen igazság” (Naked Truth), a musical comedy. On June 12, “Platón: Szókratész védőbeszéde” (Plato: The Apology of Socrates) arrives as a one-part concert-theater experience.
Mid-June: Castles, bridges, and tennis
June 13 doubles down: “Női szalon” (Women’s Salon – Almásy Treasures) and “A kastély gyertyafényben” set the tone, with more candlelit castle tours that evening. The 13th Gyulavári Castle Days (XIII. Gyulavári Castle Days) run June 13–14, while the city’s long-form Bridgehead Festival (Hídfő Fesztivál) stretches from June 13 to August 31 with open-air culture and riverside vibes. Dönci’s castle tour returns June 14.
From June 14 to 21, Gyula hosts the ITF M15 International Men’s Tennis Tournament, pulling in rising pros and local crowds. Between serves and sets, keep dipping into the ongoing exhibits, brewery tastings, guided walks, and the castle’s guaranteed programs across the month.
Pick your path: sip pálinka in the sauna, paddle the Old White Körös (Ó-Fehér-Körös) at sunset, follow a dachshund through a castle, or toast the night after a candlelit tour. In Gyula, history isn’t just displayed—it’s performed, tasted, and walked through, one long weekend at a time.
