Gyula rolls into 2026 with a packed calendar across multiple venues, mixing theater, museum nights, historical deep dives, candlelit castle tours, street walks, and plenty of craft beer. From February through May, the city leans into its heritage with Almásy Castle (Almásy-kastély), the iconic Gyula Castle (Gyulai Vár), the Ladics House (Ladics-ház), and the Castle Theatre (Várszínház) staging intimate, clever, and sometimes downright spooky programs after dark.

Walks, Beer, and Heritage

The Belvárosi barangoló city walks kick off on February 16, then pop back up on February 20, 23, and 27, putting Gyula’s downtown stories on foot. The Sörházi beugró series—guided visits and tastings at the Elixbeer Brewery—runs like a hoppy heartbeat through the month: February 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, and again on March 7 and 28. Inside the Ladics House, Császárné csészéje runs February 17–22, 24–28, and 25–27, with more dates on March 25 and 28—glimpses of bourgeois life through porcelain and ritual. Nearby, Almásy Castle’s Fűző és forradalom (Corset and Revolution) traces changing fashion and social mores on February 17–22, 24–28, and 27; it returns March 28.

The Cellar Exhibit (Pincetárlat) dips underground March 7 and April 4, May 2; Women’s Salon (Női szalon) arrives March 14 and April 11; Flowers That Speak (Beszédes virágok) blooms February 21, March 21, and April 18. Gyula Castle guarantees immersive weekends: February 20–22, 27–March 1; March 6–8, 13–15, 27–29. The candlelit castle tours—Gyertyafényes vártúrák—spark on February 21 and 28, March 7, 14, 21, 28. Stand-up, Stage Chats, and Stars

Pros
+
Family-friendly lineup with candlelit castle tours, dog-friendly walks, museum nights, and a flower festival that kids and grandparents can both enjoy
+
Lots of English-light activities (visual/history-focused tours, concerts, beer tastings), so you can still have fun without fluent Hungarian
+
Gyula’s castles and museums are genuinely unique, and nighttime tours feel more intimate than big-city European venues
+
Beer tastings at Elixbeer add a laid-back, local flavor that’s easy to enjoy for U.S. craft-beer fans
+
Prices are very budget-friendly compared to U.S. theater and museum events
+
Easy to reach by train or car from Budapest; once in town, venues are walkable and clustered
+
Compared to similar heritage nights in Western Europe, crowds are smaller and the setting feels less touristy and more authentic
Cons
Gyula isn’t a globally famous destination, so you’ll need to plan travel and expectations more than for Budapest or Prague
Many talks, plays, and stand-up shows are in Hungarian, so non-speakers may miss the nuance
Public transport after late-night events can be sparse; a car or local taxi numbers help
If you want blockbuster-style attractions, this leans more local-culture than headline international spectacles
