Gyula Walking Tour: Downtown Sights In Two Hours

Discover Gyula’s historic center on a two-hour guided walking tour with Gábor Bánkuti. Small groups, key landmarks, Monday and Friday departures. Register at Tourinform; tickets $8.40.
when: 2026.01.16., Friday
where: 5700 Gyula, Kossuth Lajos u. 7.

Explore Gyula’s historic center on a guided “Belvárosi barangoló” city walk, taking in landmark buildings and bite-sized history. All stops are viewed from the outside only, but the route packs a lot into 120 minutes, led by guide Gábor Bánkuti. Groups are small—2 to 15 people—so it’s easy to hear the stories behind each facade.
Start in front of the Tourinform office (5700 Gyula, Kossuth Lajos St. 7), then follow: Városház St., Harruckern Square, the World Clock, Kossuth Square, Kohán Gallery, Ladics House, the iconic Hundred-Year Confectionery, City Hall, St. Nicholas Church, the 1848–49 Honvéd officer memorial, the Castle, the Castle Bath, and Almásy Mansion.

Pros
+
Kid-friendly pace and outdoor-only stops mean no museum meltdowns, plus sweets at the Hundred-Year Confectionery can be a fun family bribe
+
Small groups (2–15) make it easy to hear the guide and ask questions without getting lost in the crowd
+
Budget-friendly at about $8.40 per person, so it’s an easy add-on to a day in town
+
Covers a lot of sights in just two hours—castle, bath complex, church, classic squares—so you get the gist of Gyula fast
+
No Hungarian needed—guided tour format and Tourinform start point suggest English-friendly help and signage
+
Central meeting spot and compact route make it walkable; you won’t need a car once you’re in Gyula
+
Compared with old-town walks in places like Prague or Kraków, this is quieter and more intimate, with fewer crowds and a more local vibe
Cons
Gyula and the tour theme aren’t widely known internationally, so it won’t have the “bucket list” pull of Budapest or Vienna
Limited schedule (Mon/ Fri only, specific hours) and advance in-person ticketing at the Tourinform office can be inconvenient for tight itineraries
All sights are exterior-only, so history buffs might feel shortchanged compared with interior tours in bigger European cities
Getting to Gyula can be a haul from Budapest for U.S. tourists; public transport works but isn’t as quick as major-city day trips, and driving/parking adds hassle
