Gyula rolls into late 2025 and early 2026 with a packed slate of culture, history, wellness, and street parties. The historic spa town layers exhibitions, concerts, theater, gastronomy, museum workshops, sports, and guaranteed programs across its headline venues: Gyula Castle, the Castle Theatre, the famed Várfürdő spa, and the city’s pálinka and sausage hotspots. Festivals pop from spring to autumn at the Castle Theatre, while the castle itself programs quality events almost year-round, and the Várfürdő remains one of Hungary’s most beloved medicinal baths.

New Year’s Week: Tastings, Tours, Street Parties

December 30 sets the tone: “Sörházi beugró” brewery tour and tasting at Elixbeer; Ladics House’s “Empress’s Cup”; Almásy Castle’s “Corset and Revolution”; a pre–New Year’s jam session from GyulaKult Klub; a code-breaking game at Ladics House; fencing in the castle courtyard; and the Castle Creative House jewelry workshop. December 27–30, Almásy Castle hosts the “Stefánia Circle.”
New Year’s Eve bursts open across town: Bols Café’s street party; a bash at GolfGallery; another Elixbeer tasting; “New Year’s Eve at the Vigadó”; “Empress’s Cup” at Ladics House; a ballroom at the Woodland Center; “New Year’s Eve in Gyulavári” at Kastélykert Bistro; Almásy’s “Corset and Revolution”; and a “New Year’s Party” at Teo Várkert Bistro.

New Year’s Day to January Warmup

January 1 keeps culture rolling with Ladics House’s “Empress’s Cup,” Almásy’s “Corset and Revolution,” and “New Year Welcome Shots Before the Castle.” January 2–4 brings guaranteed programs at the Castle, with January 3 delivering “Gingerbread in the Middle Ages” for kids, “The Castle by Candlelight,” candlelit castle tours, and Night Wellness at the Várfürdő. In parallel: Almásy’s exhibition and recurring “Empress’s Cup,” plus “Castle Tour with Dönci the Dachshund” on January 4. Through January 4, Almásy runs “Play and Draw for Your Luck,” while Ladics House offers “Time Travel with VR Glasses” from December 22 to January 4.

Hands-On Tech, Stand-Up, and Museum Nights

January 8 features a 3D printing club at Ladics House with body scanner use. Weekends through January are dotted with guaranteed Castle programs, Night Wellness sessions, candlelit tours, and “The Castle by Candlelight.” Gyulakult hosts Sándor Badár’s stand-up on January 15; January 23 brings “The Chef’s Dinner,” a six-course experience at La Sposa Caffè. January 26 stages “Gangster Pop, or Bonnie, Clyde, and Ganxsta.” The Museum Free University series returns January 28 with “Magical Tools and Techniques in the Roman World.”

February: Illusions, Classics, and Wellness

Regular Castle weekends continue Jan 30–Feb 1. February highlights include Night Wellness and candlelit tours (Feb 7), Gyulakult’s “Somewhere in America / Bon-Bon 30 Musical” (Feb 8), Dumaszínház: András Somogyi “Borrowed Faces” (Feb 9), Dr. Kitti Almási’s “Unfinished Threads” (Feb 12), Mór Jókai’s “The Count of Fools” by the Déryné Company (Feb 17), Magda Szabó’s “Abigail” and “Herod, Jesus, and the Holy City” (Feb 25), plus “Masters of Illusion in Gyula” (Feb 27).

Pros
+
Packed, varied lineup means there’s something for everyone—spa nights, castle tours, kids’ workshops, stand-up, foodie dinners, pálinka fest, even dog meetups
+
Super family-friendly: gingerbread-in-the-Middle-Ages for kids, VR time-travel, dachshund events, candlelit castle tours that work for multi‑age groups
+
Iconic venues concentrate the action—Gyula Castle, Castle Theatre, and the Várfürdő spa—so you can build easy, walkable days
+
The Várfürdő medicinal baths are a big Hungarian highlight and a relaxing break between events
+
Most programs are affordable by U.S. standards, and food/drink events (brewery, pálinka, chef’s dinner) upgrade the experience without breaking the bank
+
Good mix of dates across winter–summer, so you can pair it with a Budapest trip and still catch something lively
+
Car or train/bus access from Budapest is straightforward; once in Gyula, venues cluster and local buses/taxis cover the rest
Cons
Many performances and talks are in Hungarian; you’ll enjoy the vibe, but you may miss context without language skills
Gyula is lesser-known to U.S. travelers than Budapest or Lake Balaton, so you’ll do more DIY planning and research
Compared with blockbuster European festivals (Munich beer fest, Edinburgh Fringe, Prague Christmas markets), this is smaller in scale and global name recognition
Peak weekends (pálinka, Zumba, New Year’s) can book out hotels fast; driving/parking near the castle gets tight
