As soon as September arrives, harvest season sweeps over Eger (Eger) in the blink of an eye. Autumn feels almost too short, yet it is by far the most charming time for local winemakers. A year’s worth of dedication and weather challenges pays off—the grapes ripen, and the fruits of hard labor finally become visible. There is excitement in every step: from picking grapes straight off the vine to tasting the future wine right where it grows. This year, as in the past few, the Tóth Ferenc Winery (Tóth Ferenc Pincészet) invites everyone to join the harvest spectacle atop Sík Hill (Síkhegy) on September 20. Slow down for a few golden hours, bask in the season’s beauty, and be among the first to sample the current year’s vintage.
Modern Comfort for Wine Lovers
For those who do not want to choose between the city buzz and the peace of the vineyards, three self-catering apartments are available on one of Eger’s (Eger) oldest streets, just below the castle and close to the most popular restaurants and attractions. The intimate accommodation, named after the “Castle Defender” (Várvédő)—Eger’s (Eger) cherished symbol—can accommodate up to ten guests, making it perfect for wine fans and city explorers alike.
Wines, Flavors, and Historic Cellars
In the unique horseshoe-shaped cellar row of the Valley of Beautiful Women (Szépasszonyvölgy), visitors can stroll, taste, and relax. At the 46th cellar, Tóth Ferenc Winery (Tóth Ferenc Pincészet) offers everything from fresh, easy-drinking wines to their superior and grand superior selections. Book a tasting and you will receive more than wine: platters of local cheeses, gourmet dips, olive specialties, and even artisanal chocolate to tempt your palate.
Picnic Tradition with a View
Atop Sík Hill (Síkhegy), the “Tóthék” (the Tóths) picnic tradition began with just a few lounge chairs and bottles of wine. Now, it is a monthly event from summer to early fall for anyone who craves good company and vineyard sunsets—plus there is a shuttle to get you there.
A Family Legacy and a Mission
After more than 40 years and across 67 acres of stunning vineyard, the family-run winery perfects its wines in a five-branch cellar system. From the iconic slopes of Sík Hill (Síkhegy) and Great Eged Hill (Nagy-Eged), they are on a quest: refining Bull’s Blood of Eger (Egri Bikavér) and Star of Eger (Egri Csillag) blends, and showcasing grapes like Maiden (Leányka), Kadarka (Kadarka), and Blaufränkisch (Kékfrankos) to the world.
