With school out, both kids and parents have the perfect excuse to escape the classroom and dive into the wonders of the city — and the world beyond — at the Museum of Fine Arts (Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest). Children ages 6 to 14 are invited to interactive programs and exclusive museum tours designed to spark curiosity and creativity.
Ancient Greek Creativity and Venetian Nobility
On October 28, discover what daily life was like for a potter or vase painter in ancient Athens. Kids can explore the secrets of Greek artisans, learning about their skills as well as the roles of women and children in classical society.
That same day, “Lords and Ladies of Venice” introduces influential Venetians and their fashions, from puffy trousers to odd hats. The program delves into why city leaders tossed their rings into the sea and who those “painter princes” were that captured Venice’s essence on canvas.
Family Dramas and Painting Professions
October 29 features “Divine Families,” where children can unravel the legendary family feuds of the gods of ancient Egypt and discover the society-defining challenges faced by both mortals and deities. Which god founded Egypt’s most famous divine dynasty, and what family drama unfolded in their household?
Then, “Pictures and Professions” encourages kids to spot portraits of ancient trades in the museum’s galleries. Which jobs from centuries ago exist today? Which ones are unique to the modern era? Together, children imagine what today’s careers those mysterious figures might represent.
Mummies and Cozy Corners
On October 30, uncover the mysteries of “A Mysterious Embalmer’s Life.” Participants step into the shoes of Egyptian embalmers, exploring how they preserved bodies and what their role in society was. What did their daily routines look like, and how exactly did mummification work?
As autumn chills set in, “Autumn Nooks” creates inviting spaces within the museum, using art and imagination to find safe, cozy corners amid the cool surroundings.
Seasonal Surprises and Special Events
In addition to the daily programs, the museum’s calendar is filled with unique offerings all autumn. Discover the marriage of heaven and hell up close, make new friends, join “Slow Museum” educational events, and come under the protection of Hestia and Isis or practice yoga in the museum. Don’t miss the special Halloween Night at the Museum, “Masterful Selection of Masterpieces,” workshops, behind-the-scenes tours at the William Blake exhibit, and family events like “Our Friends, the Animals.”
November and December offer explorations of Egyptian mummies, scarab secrets, festivals, and more, ensuring every visit to the Museum of Fine Arts (Szépművészeti Múzeum) is full of discovery and adventure for curious minds of all ages!
