when: 2026. February 21., Saturday

2026’s Hollókő Easter Festival turns the UNESCO-listed Old Village into a living folk tale from April 3–6, packing the long weekend with Palóc traditions, music, dance, food, and family fun. Cobbled lanes and whitewashed peasant houses set the stage for nonstop programs, from dawn church rites to nighttime dance houses, egg painting to big-voice concerts. It’s a celebration of tradition and zest for life—one everyone should see at least once.

When and where

The festival unfolds in 3176 Hollókő, Ófalu (Old Village) and at the Castle. Good Friday, April 3, is a free day to roam the village and craft market. The ticket bundles admission to programs and select sights: Hollókő Castle, Oskola, Postal Museum, Village Museum, Guzsalyas Costume Collection, Craft Print Workshop, Doll Museum, and the Playhouse. Exhibition fees on April 3 are paid separately or covered by a Village Walk pass. Organizers reserve the right to change times and programs.

Pros
+
Super family-friendly: craft market, egg painting, dance lessons, museums, and a playhouse keep kids busy while adults enjoy music and food
+
UNESCO-listed Old Village backdrop feels like a real-life folk tale—great photos and a unique cultural deep-dive
+
The Easter sprinkling, mass, processions, and Palóc dance/music offer authentic traditions you won’t easily find in the U.S.
+
No Hungarian required for enjoyment—music, dance, and visuals are universal, and basic tourist English usually works at major stalls and ticket points
+
Easy to navigate once there: one ticket covers most shows plus castle and multiple small museums, so planning is simple
+
Reachable by car from Budapest in about 1.5–2 hours; parking usually organized for festivals
+
Compared with European folk festivals, this is compact, walkable, and more immersive than big-city Easter markets - Hollókő isn’t internationally famous, so first-timers may need extra research and can’t rely on name recognition like “Budapest” or “Prague”
Cons
Public transport from Budapest involves a bus (and sometimes a train+bus combo) with limited frequency; returns can be crowded on peak days
On Easter Sunday/Monday, crowds and the water-sprinkling custom can be chaotic—fun but not ideal for stroller naps or people who dislike getting splashed
Fewer big-hotel options nearby than major cities; last-minute accommodations can be tricky without a car
