Have you ever wondered how your grandmother managed to stretch that impossibly thin, delicate strudel dough without tearing it? Now you can finally unlock the secrets of homemade Hungarian strudel and bring a taste of nostalgia to your own kitchen. A hands-on strudel workshop is set for October 27, 2025, in Győr, at 8 Szent István Street (Szent István út 8). If you’ve always dreamed of making the kind of strudel that brings back childhood memories, this is your chance.
During the workshop, you’ll learn how to stretch and bake authentic homemade strudel—without worrying about it tearing in your hands. With just a few clever tricks, you’ll feel confident enough to make homemade strudel in your own kitchen. Each pair of students will craft one giant strudel, which will be sliced into 16 impressive rolls by the end of the session.
Can’t make it in October? Or simply can’t get enough strudel? Don’t worry—the same course repeats on November 22, November 24, and December 13. The December session features seasonal flavors: cottage cheese-apricot and sour cherry-poppy seed. It’s the perfect way to warm up the winter months and impress your friends and family with authentic flavors from the Hungarian countryside.
Around Győr: Where to Stay
Maybe you want more than just strudel—a bit of adventure or relaxation in this vibrant town. If you’re planning to join the workshop or just explore Győr, there are some truly unique places to stay. Just outside town, on a picturesque lakeside, there’s a holiday village with twelve charming reed-roofed cottages straight out of a storybook. In the heat of summer, the lakeside becomes a beloved beach where young people and families gather, swimming and soaking up the sun in a completely natural setting. For those who want excitement, you can rent a kayak or a small boat and head out onto the water.
The holiday village itself is set in the park, surrounded by all the greenery and tranquility you could want—especially if you need a break after working dough for hours. And the perks aren’t just for summer: passionate anglers will find the lakeside just as appealing in winter, especially if they’re staying in one of those cozy cottages.
Local Comfort and Culture: Inns and Hotels
A favorite is the Amstel Swan Inn (Amstel Hattyú Panzió), just steps from Győr’s historic downtown but nestled in a green neighborhood along the Moson Danube (Mosoni-Duna). With 53,820 square feet of space, there’s more than enough room to stretch out. This 22-room inn features everything from air conditioning to minibars, TVs, and showers—even direct water views. One of the town’s most beloved restaurants, the Amstel Swan takes pride in top-notch ingredients, skilled chefs, and the latest kitchen technology—a recipe for a memorable meal and stay.
If you prefer something a bit off the beaten path, head to the leafy outskirts, about 5 miles from the city center. Here, a youth hostel built in 1994 offers country air and plenty of peace, ideal for retreats, courses, or simply recharging. Both floors have small chapels, and the 45-bed building is open year-round. Even if you only need the dining room, lecture hall, or kitchen (and don’t want to sleep over), you can rent those too. This is especially good for spiritually minded visitors or anyone leading group workshops.
Baroque Beauty and Tradition
Craving a place right in the action? The Baroque Hotel Promenade (Barokk Hotel Promenád), a listed monument in the heart of Győr’s Old Town, is a real gem. A petite Baroque palace dating to the early 17th century, it’s filled with elegant two- and three-bed rooms (plus a special family room, a “bio room,” and a Baroque suite). All the rooms are individually named after local celebrities, reflected in the decor and little notes inside—a fun way to connect with the city’s rich history after your baking adventure.
Another crowd-pleaser is the classic BOLERO Hotel, just 10 minutes from the lively downtown and easily accessible from major highways. Known for its “bourgeois” atmosphere, live music, great food, and warm hospitality, it’s a hit with everyone from business travelers to groups of friends seeking a sophisticated evening.
Győr proves that perfect strudel and perfect accommodation are never far apart—so pack your rolling pin, book a room, and get stretching!
