Glass Opal Hunt
On April 5, 2026 (Sunday), we’re chasing a real showstopper: glass opals that sparkle with the full color spectrum and glow a bright, vivid green under UV light—shortwave or 365 nm. Best part? Everything you find is yours to keep, guaranteed to add epic new pieces to your collection.
We reach the spot via an easy 3–3.5 km (1.9–2.2 miles) hike at a relaxed pace, soaking in the area’s geological highlights along the way. Love nature, crave rare minerals, or just want a wild adventure? This one’s for you.
Meet at the Görgő-bikki rest area parking lot on Road 24 (halfway between Mátrafüred and Mátraháza) at 10 a.m. Tour wraps at 2 p.m., rain or shine.
Sign up through event comments or our Facebook contacts. Adults $13 (5000 HUF), kids $8 (3000 HUF). Short 4-hour tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine, with gear rental available – low commitment, high reward day out.
Cons
–
The 2026 date means planning your whole trip around it months or even years ahead as a US tourist.
–
Public transport from Budapest takes a couple hours with bus changes, not as seamless as hopping on a train to big-name spots.
–
Less hype than world-famous gem hunts in Australia or Sri Lanka, so it might not feel like a bucket-list blockbuster.
–
Obscure location means more research needed compared to tourist magnets like the Grand Canyon or European hotspots.
