The Museum of Applied Arts delves into the life of Nándor Gottermayer (1852–1924), a master bookbinder who balanced craft, art, and mechanization equally. The show traces how his workshop bridged handmade finesse and industrial precision without sacrificing beauty, turning bindings into design statements.
The universe beyond Gutenberg
Gottermayer Galaxy riffs on the Gutenberg Galaxy by shifting focus from content to the physical creation of books. It maps a “galaxy” built by artists, illustrators, book designers, and the binder who gave their ideas a final form. Through their collaboration, the exhibition shows how a book becomes an object—tactile, durable, and expressive.
Where and when
Hosted at the György Ráth Villa (Ráth György-villa), the exhibition runs from Saturday, July 19, 2025, to Sunday, January 11, 2026. Expect a close-up look at the production techniques, tools, and visual language that shaped Hungarian book culture—and how Gottermayer’s workshop turned spines, covers, and materials into a coherent creative cosmos.
