Budapest’s Hungarian National Gallery is rolling out Italian-language guided tours in 2026, opening up its treasure trove of Hungarian art to Italian speakers right at Szent György Square 2 (Szent György tér 2). The 60-minute tours trace a lively line from the Middle Ages to today, spotlighting the 19th and 20th centuries—and there’s even a playful promise that you might “meet Dante” among the canvases. Meeting point: the Info Point at the Hungarian National Gallery. Capacity is capped at 17 guests. The fee is $5.56, in addition to the ticket for the permanent collection.

Tour dates: January 16, 2026, 15:00–16:00, and February 13, 2026, 15:00–16:00, both in Budapest. Booking by phone is encouraged. Images are protected by the Museum of Fine Arts – Hungarian National Gallery copyright.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe: kids’ workshops, toddler programs, and weekend activities make it easy to bring the whole crew
+
Budget-friendly: the Italian tour add-on is about $5.56 on top of regular admission, which is a steal
+
Big-name venue in a famous city: the Hungarian National Gallery in Buda Castle is a well-known stop for tourists
+
Easy to reach: Buda Castle area is accessible by funicular, buses, or a quick rideshare, and walkable if you’re up for hills
+
No Hungarian required: the guided tour is in Italian, and the museum staff generally handle English at the desk
+
Strong art coverage: clear arc from Middle Ages to modern, with timely major exhibitions running
+
Novelty factor: an Italian-language tour in Budapest is a quirky, memorable twist vs standard English tours - Limited dates and capacity: only two tour dates with a 17-person cap, so you’ll need to book quickly by phone
Cons
Language mismatch for many U.S. visitors: if you don’t speak Italian, this specific tour won’t help
Images are copyright-restricted, so photo-taking may be limited compared to other museums
Compared to blockbuster art cities (Paris, Florence), Hungarian modernism is less internationally famous, so the “wow” factor might feel more niche
