Kaposvár’s BábSzínTér Társulat is dishing out puppet shows for kids all year in Vaszary Park at 7400 Fő utca (Main Street) 65-67. Get ready for fairy tales, songs, and laughs that’ll chase away any scares.
March Puppet Thrills
March 23 (Monday) at 14:00 and March 24 (Tuesday) at 14:00: Ticketed shows for schoolkids – Piroska és a farkas (Little Red Riding Hood) from Griff Bábszínház. This báboperetta (puppet operetta for tots) sings Little Red’s forest trek to Grandma’s, where a super-realistic wolf joins her—you know the drill. Grandma gets chomped, but the hunter swoops in for a happy ending. Laugh away the frights as they belt out the story! Psst, it’s starting! March 29 (Sunday) at 10:00: Fiurás Játszóház puppet playhouse fun.
April Family Matinées and More
April 5 (Sunday): Family matinee with Fiurás Játszóház at 10:00 and Tudja a manó! by Kovács Judit at 11:00. April 19 (Sunday): Same setup, but Babszem Jankó (Jack and the Beanstalk) from Ziránó Színház at 11:00. Schoolkids can catch Babszem Jankó on April 20 (Monday) at 14:00, April 21 (Tuesday) at 14:00, and April 22 (Wednesday) at 14:00, all by Ziránó Színház. Kindergarten crew gets Medvejáték (Bear Play) from MárkusZínház: April 27 (Monday) at 09:00 and 11:00, plus April 28 (Tuesday) at 09:00 and 11:00. Nonstop puppet magic!

Pros
+
Super family-friendly with puppet shows full of fairy tales, songs, and laughs that little kids adore, perfect for U.S. families on vacay
+
Classic stories like Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk are total crowd-pleasers known worldwide, so your kids will get it right away
+
Set in chill Vaszary Park on Main Street, great for picnics and playtime before or after the show
+
Puppet magic is mostly visual, so no Hungarian skills needed – the actions and songs carry the fun even if you don't speak the lingo
+
Easy day trip from Budapest by train (about 2.5 hours) or rent a car for flexibility on Hungarian roads
+
Feels authentic and cozy compared to massive U.S. kids' shows like Sesame Street Live – smaller crowds, more charm
+
Weekend matinées and school shows mean flexible timing for tourist schedules
Cons
–
Kaposvár flies under the radar for foreign visitors – most stick to Budapest, so it's an offbeat detour
–
Shows are in Hungarian, meaning some dialogue and songs might get lost without subtitles or translation
–
Public transport works but involves a train switch; driving's simpler if you're comfy with foreign roads
–
Smaller scale than big American puppet festivals or Disney on Ice – no flashy effects, just pure puppet vibes
