Every Sunday, the Liliomkert Market in Káptalantóti opens its gates in the Káli Basin, one of the loveliest corners of the Balaton Uplands. Dreamed up and created by biologist-engineer Ildikó Harmathy, this now nationally known producers’ market grew from a friendly conversation into a weekly ritual for locals and travelers who come from far away just for it. Show up hungry: weaving between stalls, it’s impossible not to resist sampling your way through baskets of crackling-and-cheese scones, fragrant caraway crescents, and oven-steaming sour-cream flatbread.
When and where
Open year-round, every Sunday from 7:00 to 14:00 at 8283 Káptalantóti, Petőfi St. 1. The market’s heartbeat is its people: producers and artisans are there in person, chatting with shoppers, offering tastes, and sending you home with fresh, quality goods straight from the source.
What to try
Food lovers load up on farmhouse cheeses, fresh pork cracklings, cured ham, syrups, preserves, fresh and dried fruits, home-baked breads, pastries, and layered strudels in all kinds of flavors. Drinks include homemade syrups, pálinka (fruit brandy), and local wines. Craft fans browse carvings, handmade decor, lavender- and rose-glazed white ceramics, and one-of-a-kind gifts. Treasure hunters dig through antiques, books, and curios that turn up in surprising numbers, especially during busy late mornings.
Pro tips
Bring cash—many vendors don’t take cards. Arrive early to beat the crowds and score the freshest bakes still warm from the oven. Liliomkert remains a meeting place as much as a market, shaped by easy conversations, generous tastings, and the simple joy of Sunday shopping in the open air.
