Pollination Under Pressure

On February 19 at 18:00 in the Básti Room, Dr. Balázs Kolics delivers Fragile Balance: The Sustainability of Pollination in the Age of Invasive Species, part of the MATE Open University series by the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The monthly program explores topics such as intelligent, precise 21st‑century agricultural machines; hunting as active social responsibility; beneficial soil microorganisms in agriculture; microplastics in our environment; climate change and how crop production adapts to shifting weather; plus a look inside animal biotechnology. The MATE Georgikon Campus welcomes all ages. Entry is free.

Inside Serial Killers’ Minds

On February 28 at 19:00 in the main theatre, Human Beasts – A Glimpse into the Minds of Serial Killers pairs former elite homicide detective Péter Doszpot with consulting psychologist Gábor Antal. Tickets are 5,500 Ft (about 15.30 USD). Who are serial killers, really? What fuels their cruel, bizarre acts? How does a psychopath think—can they be treated? What detective skills crack these cases? Do killers make mistakes that hasten capture? Through film clips and real cases, the duo shows how policing and psychology intertwine across infamous 20th‑century and contemporary Hungarian and international investigations. Is childhood trauma necessary for a serial killer to emerge? What does science say, and what do field notes reveal? Two experts, two lenses—one unsettling, unmissable night.

From Mexico to Panama

On March 2 at 18:00 in the Simándy Room, World Traveler Club – From Mexico to Panama shares more than 30 years of globetrotting: Central America’s cultures and worlds through original photos, presented by Győző Istenes. Free entry.

Tuesday With Me

On March 3 at 18:00 in the Simándy Room, Tuesday With Me hosts a conversation with ethnographer Szilvia Gyanó, moderated by Zoltán Csányi. Free entry.

Teens, Today

On March 10 at 18:00 in the main theatre, psychologist, trainer, and university lecturer Dr. Annamária Kádár speaks on Tweens and Teens – What Are They Like Today, and How Do We Connect Well with Them? Organized by Open Academy (Nyitott Akadémia). Tickets: 4,200 Ft (about 11.70 USD).

Venue: Balaton Theatre (Balaton Színház), 8360 Keszthely, Main Square (Fő tér) 3.

Pros
+
Family-friendly mix: free talks and low-cost tickets make it easy to bring kids or teens to age-appropriate sessions like pollination or travel stories
+
Internationally relatable topics (climate change, pollinators, teen psychology, true-crime psychology) even if speakers are local names
+
Location is Lake Balaton’s Keszthely, one of Hungary’s best-known resort towns to foreign visitors, with lots of hotels and lakeside attractions nearby
+
Several events are free, and paid ones are budget-friendly by U.S. standards (about $12–15)
+
Easy access by public transport: direct trains/buses from Budapest to Keszthely, then short walks to the Main Square theatre; parking available for drivers
+
No deep local knowledge needed—topics stand on their own for international audiences
+
Compared to lecture circuits in the U.S., it’s more intimate and eclectic, blending university-style talks with cultural conversations at a fraction of the price
Cons
Most talks will be in Hungarian, so non‑Hungarian speakers may struggle without translation or summaries
Not a globally famous festival; the program is niche, so it won’t carry the “bucket list” pull of major European cultural events
Evening timings and mature themes (e.g., serial killers) may limit suitability for younger kids
Reaching Keszthely by car in peak Lake Balaton times can mean traffic and tight parking near Fő tér
