when: 2026. February 26., Thursday

Keszthely’s Balaton Theatre is packing late winter with brain-tingling, conversation-sparking evenings—from a deep dive into the minds of serial killers to a free globe-trot through Central America, plus intimate talks with a folklorist and a parenting must-hear on teens. All events take place at 8360 Keszthely, Fő tér 3.

Into the Mind of a Killer

February 28, 7:00 p.m., Theatre Hall. Ticket: $14.90. “Emberi bestiák – Bepillantás a sorozatgyilkosok gondolkodásába” pairs former elite homicide chief investigator Péter Doszpot and consulting psychologist Gábor Antal for an exclusive night exploring the dark world of serial killers. With film clips and real case studies, they show how policing and psychology intertwine in infamous 20th-century and contemporary cases, both Hungarian and international. Do childhood traumas breed killers? How does a psychopath think—and can they be treated? What detective instincts crack the case? Do offenders slip up and help their own capture? Two experts, two viewpoints—one gripping evening.

Meet the Person Behind the Profession

March 3, 6:00 p.m., Simándy Room. Free entry. “Kedd-Velem” hosts an open conversation with ethnographer Szilvia Gyanó, guided by evening host Zoltán Csányi.

Pros
+
Family-friendly mix: travelogue and ethnography chats are great for kids/teens, while parents can pick the teen-parenting talk
+
Topics are globally relatable—true-crime psychology, Central American travel, and parenting teens resonate with U.S. interests
+
Keszthely sits by Lake Balaton, Hungary’s best-known resort area, so the location is recognizable to many foreign visitors
+
No Hungarian required for enjoyment if you’re into visuals and atmosphere; the travel talk uses photos, and true-crime themes are easy to follow even with limited language
+
Easy logistics: Keszthely is reachable by train or bus from Budapest in ~2.5–3 hours, and driving the M7 is straightforward with ample parking near the center
+
Great value: two events are free, and paid talks are inexpensive by U.S. standards
+
Compared with similar events in the U.S., this feels more intimate and local—expert-led, smaller venues, and low crowd stress
Cons
Most talks are likely in Hungarian; non-speakers may miss nuances, especially in Q&A
Keszthely is less famous than Budapest for first-time U.S. visitors, so it may not be on a short-trip itinerary
Late-winter timing means fewer Lake Balaton leisure options and potentially chilly, quiet evenings
True-crime focus might be too intense for younger kids, so families need to pick sessions carefully
