Szívhang (Heartbeat) – One-Act Comedy

Hárs Anna’s Szívhang hits the Balaton Theater stage on March 18, 2026, at 7 p.m. Brought by Rózsavölgyi Szalon, it’s the first show in the 2026 Spring Season ticket package. Season tickets are $54 or $65 for three shows; single tickets $20 or $24, on sale from February 2026 at the box office.
Hédi, Abigél, and Bori are lifelong friends from university days. They meet monthly for book club, now diving into Madame Bovary (Bovaryné). Their takes on the novel mirror their lives: Hédi is picking up the pieces after a messy divorce, Abigél avoids commitment, and Bori’s marriage seems perfect—until old classmate Andris stirs things up. Old grudges, missed chances, mix-ups, desires, and tempers swirl. A key goes missing, a baby arrives, confessions spill. Does it take more guts to say no or yes to love? A fun and heartfelt tale proving life is great after 50.
Cast: Szulák Andrea, Györgyi Anna, Epres Attila, Sajgál Erika. Sets by Enyvvári Péter, costumes by Cselényi Nóra, directed by Dicső Dániel. Recommended for ages 12+. 80 minutes, no intermission. Spring season tickets available at the box office.

Az osztály vesztese (The Class Loser) – Youth Play

Wéber Anikó’s hit novel is adapted into a youth play on March 25 at 2 p.m., guest performance by Budaörsi Latinovits Színház. 60 minutes straight through, tickets $9.50.
Meet ten fifth-graders: dragon-obsessed Kristóf, quiet overachiever Feri, class clown Domi. Bálint’s just Bálint. Hungry Áron, weird new kid Csaba, smelly Fanni, stuttering Anti, sweet princess Lili. Life’s tough. Popular Balázs rules. For lit class, they make a Facebook profile for Kukoricza Jancsi from János vitéz—everyone knows the password, posts pics, links, quotes.
Then a bound, masked figure appears on the wall: “The Class Loser.” Who’s the perp? Who’s the victim? Anyone from 5.a could be either. Who would you swap with? Who reminds you of you? Who would you befriend? What would you ask? Who would you avoid?
How about you? Do you feel good in class, at school, at work, in the world? Have you been bullied or bullied others? Meet these kids. Pay attention. Cast: Szőts Orsi, Fröhlich Kristóf, Vrabecz Botond (swing). Adapted by Kolozsi Angéla from the novel. For ages 10+.

A nő meg a férfi, ha elmúlt negyven (The Woman and the Man, If Over Forty)

Image theater show and chat on human fates and games, March 26 at 6 p.m. in Simándy Hall. Free, but register in advance.
Part of the “March: Women’s Month” series. A top actress and actor chat with moderator and audience through immortal female and male figures from Janikovszky Éva’s writings. They ponder life past 40-45: daily lows and highs. Have you ever flipped your opinion in 30 minutes because the roles switched—from being the convincing mom to convincing the kid? It’s hard to laugh sometimes, but in the dark, we pretend it’s others. The hilarious show hooks you fast; laughter breaks barriers. Janikovszky nails us with gentle humor.
Liberating laughter is scarce in life, unlike other ways to tackle big questions. Cast: Vándor Éva (Jászai Mari Award winner, Halhatatlanok eternal member), Szabó Simon, Tollár Mónika (director/moderator). Verse-prose joyful mix via playfulness and cheer. Sharp mirror of words. Viewer rave: “Couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for hours. Lifelike, funny, self-mocking daily life. So true, it didn’t hurt recognizing ourselves. Make it mandatory for all!” 90 minutes.

The owner’s glamorous Countess Marica, bored of fortune hunters, invents a fiancé, Baron Zsupán Kálmán. Tasziló and buddy Késmárky Pista overhear. A gypsy predicts love with a noble guy. Hidden loves, marital games, family, emotional, and financial blackmail on the road from self-assertion to self-destruction. Young István Kopjáss is elected prosecutor over his corrupt rival in Zsarátnok. He’s honest and broke but full of world-saving ideas. The job brings power—and hordes of “relatives.” Twisty plot, rich characters for hearty fun. Premiere March 27, directed by Hargitai Iván.

Pros
+
Super cheap tickets for a U.S. tourist, like $9.50 for the youth play or $18-20 for classics, way easier on the wallet than Broadway shows
+
Tons of variety in the lineup from lighthearted comedies and family plays to grand operettas and thoughtful dramas, something for every mood
+
Pretty family-friendly overall with age ratings like 10+ for the class loser youth play and 12+ for the one-act comedy, plus free kid-appropriate events
+
Right in the heart of Keszthely on Main Square by Lake Balaton, a scenic summer hotspot that's relaxing and photogenic for visitors
+
Easy to reach by public train or bus from Budapest in about 2-3 hours, or rent a car for a fun drive around Europe's largest lake
+
Free shows like the over-40 chat and clown philosophy gig mean low-risk intro to Hungarian theater without spending a dime
+
Authentic cultural dive into Hungarian plays and stars you won't find stateside, mixing local laughs with universal themes like love and family drama
Cons
Everything's in Hungarian with no English subs mentioned, so language skills are basically required to get the full story and punchlines
Keszthely's cool but not a huge draw for foreign tourists like Budapest, more off-the-beaten-path than iconic spots
The plays and topics like Móricz classics or local novels aren't internationally famous, unlike Shakespeare everywhere else
Feels like solid regional theater compared to glitzy U.S. or UK productions, less star power but cozier and cheaper vibe
