The Theater-Maker by Thomas Bernhard

Thomas Bernhard’s play A színházcsináló (The Theater-Maker) hits the Balaton Theater’s main hall on April 10, 2026, at 7 PM. Produced by Orlai Produkció, every ticket is snapped up—it’s the second show in the 2026 Spring Season Pass. Bruscon, played by National Actor Alföldi Róbert, rolls into town with his small troupe for a guest performance. But everything annoys him at this new spot, and the show’s about to start in just hours. The often-called radically pessimistic Thomas Bernhard (1931-1989) was one of his era’s top writers, always at odds with his homeland. Through his obsessive stage heroes, he unleashes epic rants against Austria’s absurd conditions and the ridiculousness of modern human existence. Experience it as a massive theater stand-up fueled by unbearable true pain and cocky, unreflected bravado. Cast: Alföldi Róbert, Buza Tímea, László Lili, Németh Áron Valentin, Ficzere Béla. Translation and adaptation by Bíró Bence. Set by Kálmán Eszter. Costumes by Juristovszky Sosa. Poster by Csáfordi László. Assistant director: Skrabán Judit. Directed by Pelsőczy Réka.

Creative team: writer-director Pozsgai Zsolt, music director Gömöry Zsolt, costume designer Debreczeni Ildikó, set designer Mira János, LED video animations Mira Zénó. It won “BEST MUSICAL DANCE PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR” in 2016! The stage features 22 Re-Production dancers, 5 top musical actors, and 21 sensational Omega hits boosting the fairy tale. The Rátonyi Róbert Theater presents A szerelem nem szégyen (Love is No Shame) – Régi filmek dalai (Songs from Old Movies) on May 30, 2026, at 6 PM in the Balaton Theater’s main hall. Tickets $25. This chamber show with a live band recreates 1930s-40s Hungarian film hits, capturing the era through two young hearts falling for each other. This colorful light music features charleston, shimmy, foxtrot, fox, and swing rhythms. We know little about that beautiful black-and-white era. It’s packed with evergreen hits and gems by Eisemann Mihály, Márkus Alfréd, Ábrahám Pál, De Fries Károly, Fényes Szabolcs. The title says it all—pure fun showing mutual attraction and longing for love’s fulfillment. Stars: Vörös Edit, Domoszlai Sándor, Heller Tamás, Gonda László, and the Palermo band. +
The Omega musical with its catchy hits and coming-of-age story feels pretty family-friendly, especially for tweens and up who dig dance and myths
+
Lake Balaton's a solid Euro summer getaway vibe, known to many foreign visitors for beaches and vibes
+
Authentic Hungarian culture dive without the Budapest crowds, perfect for off-the-beaten-path touring
Cons
All shows are in Hungarian with no English subtitles mentioned, so you'll need some language skills or just enjoy the vibes/music
Thomas Bernhard's "Theater-Maker" is dark and rant-heavy, not ideal for kids or light family fun
Keszthely's cute but not a superstar spot like Budapest for U.S. tourists; Balaton's more big in Europe
Omega rock and 1930s Hungarian film songs aren't household names in the U.S., unlike familiar Broadway or Vegas revues
