Every Tuesday, the Sóstó Museum Village (Sóstói Múzeumfalu) in Nyíregyháza hosts a hands-on weaving workshop at the Beszterec homestead, where everyone takes home their own “masterpiece.” The 50-minute session introduces the basics through a small rag rug project, turning old clothing into something useful and beautiful—just like in the countryside tradition.
In the peasant world, weaving was traditionally women’s work. Even after factory-made textiles arrived, people kept weaving rag blankets from colorful fabric strips to reuse worn-out garments. These sturdy pieces covered oven benches and wooden seats, and doubled as blankets or sheets in the stable. The workshop revives that practice with simple techniques and accessible materials, perfect for beginners and curious makers alike.
