Every Sunday, hungry visitors flock to the Liliomkert Market in Káptalantóti, nestled in the stunning Káli Valley in the Balaton Highlands. What began years ago as a casual conversation among friends has exploded into Hungary’s most talked-about farmers’ market, thanks to the vision of biologist-engineer Ildikó Harmathy. Now, dedicated shoppers and curious foodies travel from miles around to savor irresistible flavors, straight from the hands that crafted them.
Hearty Bites and Local Sips
Arriving on an empty stomach is practically a must. The air is filled with the aroma of caraway seed rolls, crackling cheese scones, and steaming, oven-fresh sour cream-topped “lángos” (Hungarian flatbread). Every table tempts you with baskets loaded with savory bites, sweet pastries, fresh and dried fruits, homemade jams, and more, all offered by local producers eager to share their best. Drinks are also a highlight—think aromatic local wines, homemade syrups, and fiery fruit “pálinka” (brandy).
Handmade Finds and Laid-back Vibes
From hand-carved wood and lavender ceramics, to antique trinkets and unique gifts, the selection is never boring. The beating heart of the market, though, is the direct connection between buyers and makers—conversations flow as easily as cash.
Good to Know
The market runs every Sunday, year-round, from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM at 1 Petőfi Street (Petőfi u. 1). Crowds peak early, and wallets should be stuffed with cash—many stalls can’t accept cards. Mark your calendars for October 26, 2025, but keep an eye out for program changes: the organizers reserve the right to switch things up.
