Sopron and its neighbors roll out a long weekend of May Day action in 2026, mixing small-town charm with city buzz. Think open-air concerts, local bites, guided walks, lakeside escapes, theater nights, flea finds, and family fun—spread across multiple venues in and around Sopron (9400) and Hegykő.
Kickoff Traditions
On April 30, the maypole goes up in Sopronbánfalva, while Hegykő hosts its own maypole-raising—classic community rituals to set the mood for the holiday.
May 1: Eat, Run, Celebrate
The Tócsni és Sör Majális pops up by Sopron Plaza with crispy potato fritters and cold beer. Runners take over Fertőszentmiklós (9444) for City Running Day. Families flock to Sopronkövesd for a community fair, while Hegykő stages its full-on Majális. The Stone Quarry (Kőfejtő) in Fertőrákos opens for a festive day, and Sopron toasts BÖZSI’s 2nd birthday. Harka hosts the laid-back Kógli Picnic. Theater fans can catch Lovers of Ancona (Anconai szerelmesek), the musical comedy, in Sopron.
Weekend Deep Dive
May 2 brings an e-boat ride on Lake Fertő from Fertőrákos, free heritage walks—Giants’ Shoulders, tracing famous Sopron families, and Sopron, City of Superlatives, a downtown tour—plus Nemez Banda’s dance house and workshop, a spring flea market at Lővér Camping, and an Asparagus Dinner at Zachár Cellar. Lovers of Ancona returns May 2 and 3, alongside Guerrilla Improv Theater’s Grab Bag (Zsákbamacska), a baroque-costume city ramble, and the Body and Movement finissage. Wrap up later with Green May Day in Lenck Villa’s garden on May 17.
