The Hajnal Hotel in Mezőkövesd hosts a full-on countryside-style pig feast weekend that blends classic Hungarian flavors with easygoing hotel comfort and wellness perks. It’s a throwback to traditional pig-slaughter (disznótor) vibes without giving up downtime and spa time, wrapped in a friendly, family-run atmosphere. The event runs on selected weekends from January through April and again from October to December 2026, always with live music and a generous buffet. Note: it only goes ahead with a minimum of 40 guests.

Friday Warm-Up With Live Music

Arrivals on Friday slide straight into a buffet dinner with live music, the perfect mood-setter for the days ahead. From the first night, the spread and the band set a cheerful, communal tone that carries the weekend. The hotel’s cozy services take the edge off travel and shift the focus to food, company, and relaxation.

Saturday: All-Day Pig Feast (Disznótor)

Saturday leans fully into tradition. Early birds get a shot of pálinka and a cup of mulled wine per person at reception from 7:00 to 9:00. A big buffet breakfast follows from 7:00 to 10:00. At noon, the classics take over: pork broth (orjaleves) with fine noodles and vegetable garnish; pork-and-sauerkraut stew (toros káposzta); roast meats with potatoes; and fresh strudel (rétes). The highlight is the evening pig feast with live music and a rich buffet: soups; roasted meats and ribs; blood sausage (hurka) and sausage (kolbász); mashed potatoes with onions; stuffed cabbage (töltött káposzta); and for dessert, honey cream slice (mézes krémes) and pudding. The soundtrack and the menu together lock in that unmistakable village feast atmosphere.

Sunday Send-Off

Sunday wraps with a hearty buffet breakfast featuring cracklings and bacon, a simple, satisfying full stop to a weekend loaded with flavor. Guests can still use wellness and other hotel services even after checking out of the room by 10:00.

Wellness And Extras

Beyond the tables, the hotel’s wellness area is open for a soft landing between meals and an easy recharge. Extend your stay by adding Thursday and/or Sunday nights and pick one complimentary treatment: shockwave therapy, mofetta cabin, 3D massage chair, BEMER, or jade stone massage bed. Book both Thursday and Sunday and get two gifts. Treatments aren’t automatic—request them at reception.

Pros
+
Family-friendly setup with kid discounts, buffet meals, and a chill wellness area parents can use between activities
+
Fun cultural deep-dive into a traditional Hungarian disznótor with live music and classic dishes you won’t easily find in the U.S.
+
Location prices are budget-friendly by U.S. standards, with clear add-on night rates and no advance deposit required
+
English not strictly necessary—food is the main “language,” staff at hotels often handle basic English, and the program is straightforward
+
Easy weekend structure (Fri–Sun) with flexible add-on nights and wellness perks for downtime
+
Reachable by car from Budapest in roughly 1.5–2 hours; parking included and public transport to Mezőkövesd is workable via train/bus plus short taxi
+
Stacks up well versus other European food weekends: more immersive and affordable than many farm-to-table or Oktoberfest-adjacent events - May be intense for vegetarians/vegans or anyone squeamish about pork-centric traditions
Cons
Mezőkövesd isn’t a globally famous stop, so first-time visitors may need extra planning and a rental car for maximum ease
Live music and communal vibe can be loud—less ideal if you want a quiet spa retreat
Minimum 40 guests means possible date cancellations or changes, which can complicate travel plans
