A rustic winter tradition gets the hotel treatment in Mezőkövesd as the Hajnal Hotel rolls out its Disznótoros Weekend, blending a classic Hungarian pig-slaughter feast with wellness downtime and live music. Throughout the season, guests can tuck into freshly made toros dishes, soak up the family vibe, and enjoy a program that’s half culinary celebration, half cozy retreat. The event runs Friday to Sunday at 3400 Mezőkövesd, Hajnal St. 2 (Hajnal u. 2.), with a minimum of 40 guests required to go ahead.

Friday arrival sets the tone with a live-music buffet dinner. The generous spread and the band bring on that cheerful, communal, country-house energy right away, so the weekend starts social and stays that way.

Saturday: The Feast Day

The morning lands with a proper tor twist: each guest gets one shot of pálinka and one cup of mulled wine between 7:00–9:00 at reception, then a buffet breakfast from 7:00–10:00. Lunch keeps it traditional with a buffet featuring pork backbone soup with vermicelli and vegetables, toros cabbage, roast meats with potatoes, and fresh strudel.

Evening is the highlight: the disznótor with live music and a buffet piled high with soups, roasted meats and ribs, blood and liver sausages, mashed potatoes with onions, stuffed cabbage, plus honey cream slice and pudding for dessert. The music and old-school flavors do the rest—pure, big-hearted village atmosphere.

Sunday, Wellness, Extras

Sunday wraps with a hearty buffet breakfast featuring cracklings and bacon—just the right finish for a flavor-packed weekend. Between meals, guests can relax in the hotel’s wellness area for some post-feast recharging.

Extend your stay on Thursday and/or Sunday night and get a gift treatment: choose one from shockwave therapy, mofetta cabin, 3D massage chair, BEMER, or jade stone massage bed. Book both Thursday and Sunday and the gift doubles. Gift treatments aren’t automatic; request them at reception.

Extra night with half board (buffet breakfast and dinner, wellness, parking): Hajnal Wing USD 55/person/night; Kikelet Wing USD 58/person/night.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe with kids’ discounts, roomy family options, and low-stress wellness downtime between meals
+
Clear seasonal dates and transparent pricing in USD make planning easy for U.S. visitors
+
Internationally “Hungarian” theme (disznótor, live folk-ish music, pálinka) offers an authentic cultural deep-dive you won’t easily find stateside
+
No-deposit booking and pay-on-site flexibility reduce risk for overseas travelers
+
Hungarian not required for enjoying buffets, music, and wellness; staff at hotels in tourist areas usually manage basic English
+
Easy to reach by car via M3 motorway from Budapest; parking included and town driving is straightforward
+
Good value versus similar rural food-and-folk weekends in Western Europe, with wellness perks and optional extra-night treatments - The subject (traditional pig-slaughter feast) isn’t widely known internationally, so expectations may need a quick Google primer
Cons
Mezőkövesd is lesser-known to foreign tourists compared with Budapest or Eger, so fewer English-tour options and nightlife
Heavy pork-centric menus and blood/liver sausages aren’t ideal for vegetarians, picky eaters, or anyone avoiding rich foods
Public transit from Budapest requires train or bus plus local transfer, so it’s slower and less seamless than driving
