where: Nagykőrös, Alsójárás dűlő 1., 0247
Nagykőrös revives its centuries-old market tradition in 2025 with ten bustling fairs, headlined by the St. Andrew’s Day (András-nap) edition on December 7. Expect a sprawling selection: clothes, gifts, plants, and a full animal market featuring horses, cattle, pigs (plus goats and sheep), poultry, and small pets. The atmosphere leans full folk festival, with heritage programs featuring folk dancers, puppeteers, Hungarian song, operetta, and street entertainment.
Royal Roots, Living Traditions
The town’s market privilege dates back to a royal charter, upheld since the apostolic majesty of Maria Theresa in December 1759. In that spirit, Nagykőrös’s orderly council set the 2025 fair days, keeping the fair open to the heirs of csikós horsemen, gulyás herdsmen, swineherds, and shepherds—driving all manner of livestock. Artisans of old guild crafts, merchants, street cooks, minstrels, comedians, fire-eaters, jesters, and criers are all expected—so long as they bear stamped proof of trade and pay market dues in good faith. The proclamation was sealed in the Month of the Assumption, 2025, by Mayor Dr. Szabolcs Czira.
Opening Hours and Layout
Gates open early: stall market at 4:30 a.m.; pig gate at 5:00 a.m.; cattle gate at 5:30 a.m.; horse market gate at 6:00 a.m. Weather permitting, trading runs until 1–2 p.m. The December 7 St. Andrew’s Day (András-nap) Fair caps the season—Nagykőrös will be ready.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe with folk dancers, puppets, street shows, and plenty of daytime activity that’s easy to enjoy with kids
+
Fascinating living-heritage angle—royal-charter markets, csikós horsemen, guild crafts—authentic and photogenic
+
Animal market (horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, poultry) is a rare, immersive slice of rural Central Europe you won’t see in most U.S. fairs
+
December 7 St. Andrew’s Fair gives a seasonal, festive hook that pairs well with a winter Budapest trip
+
No Hungarian required for browsing; visuals, music, and food are self-explanatory, and basic English usually suffices for buying simple items
+
Easy regional access: Nagykőrös sits in central Hungary, reachable from Budapest by M5/M44 corridors or regional trains/buses, with simple driving and parking around market zones early
+
Compared with similar events abroad, it feels more traditional and less commercial than Western European Christmas markets and far more “working rural” than U.S. county fairs
- Early start (4:30–6:00 a.m. gates) means a pre-dawn wake-up or overnight nearby, and trading winds down by early afternoon
Cons
–
Animal-market sights, smells, and crowding can be intense for some families, and muddy if weather turns
–
Nagykőrös isn’t a globally famous destination, so you’ll find fewer tourist services, less signage in English, and limited hotel stock
–
Public transport is workable but slower than driving; expect a transfer from Budapest and a walk from the station to the fairgrounds
