Centuries-Old Privilege Lives On

The fair’s tradition dates back to December 1759, when, by the grace of Her Apostolic Majesty Maria Theresa, the loyal council and judge of Nagykőrös (Nagykoros) were granted market privileges. Since then, the heirs of the csikós horsemen, cowherds, swineherds, and shepherds have driven in livestock, oxen, and other cattle. Expected guests today still include practitioners of old guild crafts, merchants, and grill cooks. Minstrels, lutenists, comedians, fire-eaters, strolling players, and criers will arrive—all who can prove their craft with an authentic seal and pay the market toll in good faith.

Ten-Fair Season

Nagykőrös (Nagykoros) holds nationwide animal and flea markets ten times a year, with nearly 400 season-pass vendors and an exceptionally diverse range of goods. The Frigyes Day fair welcomes visitors on 02/22/2026 in Nagykőrös (Nagykoros), at 1 Alsójárás Dűlő. Dr. Szabolcs Czira, mayor of the market town of Nagykőrös (Nagykoros), greets arriving guests.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe with animals, music, and food stalls that kids and adults can both enjoy
+
Historic tradition dating back to 1759 adds a unique cultural angle you won’t get at a standard flea market
+
Big, lively crowd (5,000–25,000) gives it a festive small-town Hungary feel without tourist-trap pricing
+
No Hungarian needed for browsing and buying small items; numbers, gestures, and basic English usually work
+
Easy day trip from Budapest by car (about 1–1.5 hours on good roads) and manageable by regional train + local taxi
+
Early-gate schedule means you can see authentic livestock trading in action, a rare experience for U.S. visitors
+
Compared with county fairs or livestock auctions in the U.S., it’s denser, older, and more crafts-and-guild focused, with fewer rides and more heritage - Not a globally famous event or destination, so you’ll find limited English signage and little online guidance
Cons
Location (Nagykőrös/Nagykoros) isn’t a standard stop for foreign tourists, so amenities and ATMs may be sparse near the fairgrounds
Very early start (4:30–6:00 a.m. gates) and the fair can wind down by early afternoon, so late risers may miss the action
Public transport requires planning (regional train/bus plus a walk or taxi), and parking can be hectic on peak days
