Pros
+
Free entry makes it a budget-friendly New Year’s plan for travelers
+
Family-friendly vibe early in the evenings, with live bands and a public square setting where kids can enjoy lights, snacks, and fireworks
+
Eger is a charming, safe small city with a walkable center; Dobó Square is the main plaza, so it’s easy to find
+
No Hungarian needed: it’s a music-and-fireworks celebration, and basic English should be enough for food stalls and directions
+
Easy access: Eger is about 1.5–2 hours from Budapest by train or car, and once there, the square is reachable on foot or local buses
+
Lineup blends local favorites and global-flavored acts (Bryan Adams tribute, Americana touches, folk-punk), so there’s something familiar even if you don’t know Hungarian artists
+
Compared with other European NYE street parties, this offers a cozy, less-crowded atmosphere with authentic local flair
- Eger and the performers aren’t widely known internationally, so star-power seekers may be underwhelmed
Cons
–
Cold winter weather and long outdoor sets can be tough for small kids or anyone sensitive to low temps
–
Public transit back to Budapest after midnight is limited; staying overnight in Eger or arranging a car is wiser
–
If you want Times Square–level spectacle, this is smaller-scale with fewer big-budget effects and amenities
