New rules shaping the market
A government decree updated on November 21, 2024—the amendment to 210/2009 (IX.29.)—now directly affects the pet market. Under Section 18/B on the conditions for commercial activities at fairs, markets, and shopping centers, selling the following at animal fairs is prohibited: a) dogs, b) domestic cats, and c) wild-caught birds. In addition, as a nationwide precaution against avian influenza, poultry sales are currently banned at the pet market.
What to expect on December 14
Visitors will find only pets currently permitted under the rules, along with every essential tool and accessory needed for responsible pet and ornamental animal care.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe with small pets and gear on display; easy to wander with kids and learn about responsible care
+
Clear rules ban sales of dogs, cats, wild-caught birds, and (for now) poultry, which signals an ethics-and-safety focus
+
Great for niche pet lovers (ornamental animals, accessories) you won’t often see at U.S. farmers’ markets
+
Budget-friendly browsing; markets in Hungary are generally low-cost or free entry
+
Hungarian not strictly required—simple buying/browsing works with gestures, prices, and Google Translate
+
Nyíregyháza is reachable by train or car from Budapest; the Sunday 6 a.m.–2 p.m. window helps with day-trip timing
+
Compared to U.S. flea markets or European bird/fish fairs, this leans more regulated and welfare-minded due to recent decree
Cons
–
Nyíregyháza isn’t a top-tier international destination, so fewer English signs and less tourist infrastructure than Budapest
–
Limited animal variety now (no dogs/cats/poultry) may disappoint families expecting a broader “petting” experience
–
Early start time means a pre-dawn wake-up or Saturday overnight; winter dates can be cold and bleak
–
Public transit is fine to the city, but reaching Fokos Street Market and parking details may require local info and navigation apps
