Ócsa rolls into summer with an all-ages lineup that’s equal parts tradition and fresh energy. From May 8 to June 5, the 50th Ócsa Cultural Days (Ócsai Kulturális Napok) takes over multiple venues across the 2364 Ócsa area with music, literature, theater, heritage tours, workshops, and community sports. Around it, weekly free clubs at the Egressy Gábor Leisure Center (Egressy Gábor Szabadidőközpont) keep locals learning and meeting up, while family days, church fundraisers, and stand-up nights stack the calendar well into summer.
Poetry, young talent, and a temple gig
Kicking off on May 13, VersMindenÁron lands at Egressy for students from Ócsa Bolyai János High School (Ócsai Bolyai János Gimnázium): actor Áron Sövegjártó fires up classical and contemporary poems in a fast, funny, modern-hour format. It’s free as part of the 50th Cultural Days.
On May 14, students from the Ócsa branch of the Muses Elementary School of Arts (Múzsák Alapfokú Művészeti Iskola) bring a chamber concert to Egressy, a gentle showcase that doubles as encouragement from the audience.
May 15 is double-booked: Aranyakkord — the intimate project of Quimby frontman Tibi Kiss with Gábor Vastag and Gábor Andor Ufo — performs inside the Ócsa Reformed Monument Church (Ócsa Református Műemléktemplom). Expect poetic lyrics and sweeping melodies rendered more powerful by the medieval space. The same night, Loud Friday (Hangos Péntek) at #abisztró keeps things casual: chat, sip something good, and drift between funk, house, techno, retro, or even a live request set depending on mood. The Loud Friday series returns May 23, 29, June 5, and June 12.
Spring marsh miracles and make-it-yourself dolls
On May 16, lace up for The Wonders of the Spring Fen Meadow (A tavaszi láprét csodái), a guided hike into rarely visited corners of the Ócsa Landscape Protection Area (Ócsai Tájvédelmi Körzet). It’s orchid season, with chances to spot multiple uncommon species and learn how these fens formed, why they matter, and who else thrives there, from perching songbirds to hunting raptors. Tickets are online only.
That afternoon, the Waldorf Doll Workshop (Waldorf babaműhely) at Egressy runs monthly: craft your own handmade, one-of-a-kind doll in a Saturday workshop from 2–5 p.m.
Science over coffee, and a town that plays
Also May 16, OPKE’s Café Evenings (Kávéházi esték) hosts science ambassador Balázs Boncsarovszki for a café-stage talk moderated by OPKE president Katalin Pappné Hajdu. It’s about how curiosity grows into research and community-minded scientific careers.
That day, the city goes all in on Clear the Field (Szabad a pálya), a sports day at the Ócsa Sports Ground (Ócsai Sportpálya). The five-a-side football cup revives an old tradition, with advance email sign-up or on-site until 8:30 a.m., a team fee of 20,000 HUF (about 54 USD), up to eight teams, at least three matches each, kickoff at 9 a.m. Want to know your speed? Enter Ócsa’s Fastest at 10 a.m. The day also packs sports demos and relay games for the little ones.
Herbs, skills, and seniors online
May 17 brings Nature’s Pharmacy (A természet gyógyszertára), a medicinal-plant walk for ages 12+ that helps you tell edible, toxic, and healing species apart, with short stories about their past and present uses. In part two, make tea and a remedy (cream or medicinal honey) from what’s in season. Tickets are online only.
From May 18–20, Digital Training for Seniors (Idősek digitális oktatása) helps seniors get more confident online. And week by week, Egressy hosts entirely free community clubs — learn something new or just find your people — running May 11–16, 18–23, 25–30; June 1–6, 8–13, 15–20, 22–27; June 29–July 4; July 6–11, 13–18, 20–25, 27–Aug 1; Aug 3–8, 10–15, 17–22, 24–29, Aug 31–Sept 5; Sept 7–12, 14–19, 21–26, Sept 28–Oct 3; and Oct 5–10.
Authors, comedy, and a charity piano night
On May 22, bestselling author Anita Tomor visits in collaboration with the Tamás Falu City Library (Falu Tamás Városi Könyvtár): expect travel-fed settings, personal inspirations, and a candid Q&A on life, books, and craft.
May 23 offers two moods: another Loud Friday at #abisztró, and Classics as Guests (Klasszikusok vendégségben), a charity piano concert by Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra soloist Endre Hegedűs with timeless masterworks. Proceeds support the Holy Trinity Church (Szentháromság Templom) garden renovation.
May 27 is packed. At 2 p.m., the 2nd Participatory Forum (Részvételi Fórum) invites Ócsa’s seniors for a roundtable on making daily life more livable, active, and community-driven. That evening at Egressy, László Lakatos’s stand-up show I’m Back (Megjöttem) hits the Dumaszínház stage, with opener Oliver Wolf; tickets run 7,890–9,590 HUF (about 21–26 USD).
Open cellars, theater, and family days
May 29 brings the HeArt Company’s (HeArt Társulat) two-act riot Deadly Wedding Night (Hullajó nászéjszaka), a modern dating farce where the perfect bride’s past is literally killer, and where love, fear, and obsession dance on a razor’s edge.
On May 30, the 50th Cultural Days peak with St. Urban’s Day Open Cellars (Orbán-napi Nyitott Pincék) at the Öreghegy Cellar Row (Öreghegyi Pincesor), an all-day open-cellar celebration from 10 a.m. May 31 is Children’s Day (Gyereknap) — a full-on, joy-first celebration for the whole family.
Remembrance, summer kick-off, and teachers honored
June 4 marks the Day of National Unity with a local commemoration. June 5 swings cheerful with the Summer-Welcoming Catholic Charity Potluck Ball (Nyárköszöntő Katolikus Jótékonysági Batyus Bál): a bring-a-dish community evening with garden-party vibes under a courtyard tent, music, conversation, and fundraising for a good cause. That same day, Ócsa salutes its educators with Teachers’ Celebration (Pedagógusok ünnepe), an appreciation night for teachers and staff — the everyday heroes building the future.
June laughs, and summer for kids
On June 12, Anett Kormos brings Women Have No Sense of Humor (A nőknek nincs humora) to Egressy, tickets 8,900 HUF (about 24 USD), with Loud Friday returning the same evening at #abisztró. From June 29–July 3, the Folk House Summer Kids’ Camp (Tájházi nyári gyerektábor) welcomes ages 6–12 for a day camp rooted in local heritage — a bright, hands-on start to the school break.
A golden 50th, still growing
Ócsa Cultural Days 50 is a month-long toast to half a century of community culture: rock to opera, folk to songbook classics, and modern forms woven in for every age. The detailed program continues to expand — and the memories, as always in Ócsa, are made together.
