Step into Budapest’s Törley Sparkling Wine Manufactory (Törley Pezsgőmanufaktúra) and Visitor Center and find yourself surrounded by nearly 150 years of effervescent history. Founded in the late 19th century, the Törley sparkling wine dynasty has experienced its share of triumphs and challenges. Today, visitors come to explore the museum, stroll the atmospheric cellars, and immerse themselves in the art of fine sparkling wine—all while feeling like they’ve stepped inside an enormous cork.

A Walk Through Fizzy History

As you enter the Törley Collection and Visitor Center, prepare for a visual journey like no other. The imaginative exhibition space guides you through the inner sanctum of a giant cork, then into a bottle, and finally into a sparkling wine glass. It’s a museum experience designed to stick in your memory—and your Instagram feed.

But the real magic lies in the process itself—a craft that combines old-world traditions with modern technology. While gleaming stainless-steel tanks stand alongside tools that look straight out of a 19th-century photograph, the essentials remain unchanged: time, patience, and an expert touch.

The Cellar Labyrinth

Descend three stories below ground into the sprawling network of Törley cellars, where hundreds of thousands of bottles mature gracefully. Traditional sparkling wines undergo a slow aging process, with bottles arranged in heaps (“maglyák”) and riddling racks (“rázóállványok”). Some vintages won’t see daylight for up to three years. Every six months, dedicated cellar hands move and gently shake each bottle to refine flavors—keeping those yeasty sediments in play for the perfect fizz.

Magnum-sized bottles serve as the base for transvasée-style sparkling wines, a technique that allows for more automation. Still, machines can’t replace the human touch. Workers carry tons of bottles daily, stacking baskets and metal containers carefully, with each container’s important details meticulously labeled. The wines ferment and age here for anywhere from nine months to a year and a half before the finishing process seals their fate as future party starters.

Planning Your Visit: Essentials

Only groups that register in advance may visit outside of scheduled public programs. For individual visits and guided tours, you need to monitor published dates and sign up ahead of time—no walk-ins are allowed. For the popular Törley Cellar Walk and the Budafok Cellar Tour (Budafoki Pincejárat), group sizes are strictly limited, and you must complete registration by noon on the Thursday before your chosen date. Confirmation is only valid once you receive it by email.

The cellars maintain a brisk 54–57°F (12–14°C), so dress warmly. Leave high heels at home—those cobbled, chilly corridors mean business. No food or drink is allowed inside the museum, cellars, or tasting rooms, and tours are conducted exclusively in Hungarian unless you specifically opt for an English or German guide (about $40 per group). Private interpreters are discouraged because lacking insider terms can slow down the experience and affect the timing.

Buy your tickets in person on the day of your visit—Törley happily accepts credit cards and the local Széchenyi card (Széchenyi kártya). If your group is smaller than 15, your program may be canceled, so gather your friends. Groups of more than 30 will be split up by the staff according to capacity. Arrive on time; if you are more than 30 minutes late without calling, your slot will be canceled. The official visiting hours are Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 4 PM.

Sparkling Tour Packages

Pick your preference, but everyone in your group must agree on the same wine-tasting package:

3 Technology: Tour the museum and cellars with tastings of one traditional, one transvasée, and one tank-fermented sparkling wine.

Expanded: Like the basic, but with two transvasée tastings.

Extra: Two traditional, two transvasée, and one tank-fermented sample.

Bubbles of Europe: Sip your way across the continent: one Prosecco, one Törley transvasée, one Cava, and one Champagne.

Your tasting glass is included. Custom tastings can be arranged with advance notice.

House Rules & Good to Know

Pets are not allowed, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult or teacher chaperone (although the sparkling wine is strictly for adults). After your tour, don’t miss the Törley gift shop, where you’ll find wines, sparkling wine accessories, and logo souvenirs for the perfect sparkling send-off.

Payment is in forints (HUF), but credit cards are accepted, and transfers can be arranged in advance. The staff maintains old-school charm while keeping things running smoothly—from cellar, to glass, to the treasure-filled gift shop.
