Remembering 1956: Rural Revolution In Szentendre (Szentendre)

Experience the 1956 Hungarian Revolution in Szentendre with interactive exhibits and crafts at Skanzen—history for all ages, honoring rural heroes beyond Budapest.
when: 2025.10.23., Thursday
where: 2000 Szentendre, Sztaravodai út

Most discussions about the 1956 Hungarian Revolution focus on dramatic moments in Budapest, but the countryside deserves just as much attention. The revolution both began and ended outside the capital, with not only intellectuals in large provincial towns, but also industrial workers and even villagers rising up to organize and resist.

History Comes Alive

On October 23, 2025, the Open Air Ethnographic Museum (Skanzen) in Szentendre (Szentendre) will host a program honoring this often-overlooked “rural revolution.” Several historical farmsteads at the museum were actual sites of crucial events in 1956, so visitors can explore what really happened in these villages during and after October 1956.

Festival for All Ages

The day isn’t just about commemorations. The organizers want history to become a living experience for everyone, so alongside exhibitions, people of all ages can take part in crafts and try games from the era. The day promises to blend powerful shared memories with hands-on activities, making history something you can truly feel.

2025, adrienne
