Liberty Square (Szabadság tér) in the heart of Budapest is gearing up for its ninth annual Downtown Beer Festival (Belvárosi Sörfesztivál), taking place from September 2 to 7, 2025. For six days, over 30 breweries and more than 250 types of beer will flow into downtown, making it Hungary’s largest open-air beer celebration. Whether you love a classic pilsner or want to try a quirky fruit brew, there’s something for everyone under the glow of fairy lights as summer winds down.
A Kaleidoscope of Craft and Classics
Every year, Hungary’s top brewers, leading craft producers, and major international importers set up side by side, bringing fans a lineup that’s richer and more diverse than ever. The craft selection keeps up with changing tastes: fruity blends and alcohol-free beers are bigger hits each year, attracting curious newcomers. Lighter styles like lagers and New England IPAs are becoming festival staples, alongside inventive seasonal specials.
SPAR, the festival’s main sponsor, returns with its own stand highlighting market trends. This year’s official event beers, Happy Cherry and Cute Grapefruit, capture all-out summer fruitiness, while BE(ER) COOL Light Lager and Free Flow Alcohol-Free IPA deliver flavor without the punch. It’s clear brewers are blending both bold tradition and the preferences of a new generation of drinkers.
From Bavaria to Beijing—Global Brews and Gourmet Bites
In addition to local legends, this year’s festival features new selections from Scotland, Ireland, and China. You won’t miss Bavarian, Czech, Belgian, or signature Hungarian classics (magyar klasszikusok)—each ready to show what makes their region special. Visitors can delve deeper at pairing workshops, rum tastings, and hands-on classes that blend beer knowledge with culinary delights.
The outstanding food truck lineup offers much more than beer, serving gourmet burgers, street BBQ, churros, and more. Cheese and sausage pairings are a must, while fresh seafood and even prosecco bars provide delicious diversions from all things brewed.
Who’s Pouring?
Brewers and exhibitors for 2025 include FIRST Craft Beer, Mad Scientist, BrewDog, Paulaner, Pilsner Urquell, Estrella, Horizon Brewing, Saint Andrew’s Brewery (Szent András Sörfőzde), and Tsingtao, among others. Expect to meet everyone from small Hungarian microbreweries to international giants—all eager to pour their latest creations for thousands of festival-goers.
Free Entry, Take Home the Glass
The Downtown Beer Festival (Belvárosi Sörfesztivál) is open to all with no entry fee, but there’s a twist: anyone wanting to sample the beers must buy a unique festival glass on-site. Premium festival glasses cost about $12, while the exclusive design is $17. The event opens at noon every day, closing at midnight on weekdays and Sundays, and extending until 2:00 a.m. from Thursday to Saturday.
Soak up the atmosphere, make new friends, and savor a cold pour under the stars—the only hard part is deciding which beer to try next.
