Somló Hill (Somló-hegy) and the unique Juhfark grape are truly a match made in heaven for wine lovers craving distinct volcanic flavors. When these two come together, the result is a complex, mineral-rich wine that cannot be replicated anywhere else. Each year, Somló’s winemakers gather to showcase their finest Juhfark selections at the largest tasting event dedicated to this exceptional variety. The producers themselves pour the wines, share stories, and answer questions—a true celebration of Somló (Somló), its grapes, and the shared love of extraordinary wine.
Festival Highlights
On October 11, 2025, the main event at Tornai Winery (Tornai Pincészet) promises the ultimate walk-around tasting, running from 1:30 PM to 7:00 PM and featuring the best Juhfark wines in the region. Tickets cost $34, with early bird pricing at $29.
Deep Dives and Tasting Adventures
Three special workshops turn the day into a journey for true enthusiasts. “Around Somló” (2:30 PM-3:30 PM) offers a miniature train tour through the vineyards with exclusive tastings at top wineries along the way; tickets are $24. The “Somló Museum and Cellar Tour” (3:30 PM-4:30 PM) gives an insider’s look and tastings right where the magic happens—starting at the unique Somló Museum (Somlói Múzeum). This experience costs just $8. “The Faces of Juhfark” (4:30 PM-5:30 PM) is a vertical tasting led by Tamás Tornai, featuring gold-medal Juhfark from over 15 vintages ($24). Plus, a grill kitchen on the terrace will offer festival-exclusive dishes—menu coming soon.
Getting There Is Easy
Organizers offer free local transfers from nearby accommodations if you sign up in advance (deadline: October 3, midnight). A special bus from Budapest is also available for $21 round-trip. It departs Budapest at 11:00 AM and returns after the tasting concludes at 7:00 PM.
Where Tradition Meets Modern Vibe
Tornai Winery’s (Tornai Pincészet) newly renovated SÉD CELLAR guesthouse (SÉD PINCE) sits on the peaceful west side of Somló (Somló). Built in the late 17th century, it preserves its historic charm while offering modern comforts, earning it special architectural protection status. Surrounded by tranquil vineyards and local sights, it’s a relaxing base, just steps from top wineries and attractions.
The Stars of Somló
This wine region is home to vibrant, family-run cellars. Bogdán Estate’s (Bogdán Birtok) philosophy blends deep-rooted tradition with world-class winemaking, welcoming visitors year-round to taste their wines with a view—whether on a sunny terrace or in a cozy, fire-warmed hall. Chancellor Estate (Kancellár Birtok), led by Ferenc Horváth since 2014, is one of Somló’s youngest yet most dynamic wineries, now spanning 49 acres of rugged hills.
The heavyweight? Tornai Winery (Tornai Pincészet), cultivating over 124 acres, specializes in authentic Somló (Somló) classics: Juhfark, Furmint, Italian Riesling (Olaszrizling), and Linden Leaf (Hárslevelű), plus some Pinot varieties for good measure. Two signature wine lines, Tornai Classic and Top Selection, are crafted to suit every palate.
Plan Accordingly!
