Sopron’s 2026 calendar is stacked. The historic city rolls through the year with festivals, cultural highlights, wine-soaked evenings, family days, themed walks, and open-air nights—most of it set in the old town’s narrow streets and the surrounding wine hills. From July to New Year’s Eve, here’s what lands when, where to sleep, and where to refuel between events.
July: Baroque, trivia, films, and family days
BarokkKult returns for its eighth edition in Bánfalva from July 8–12, filling churches and courtyards with period music and costumed flair. On July 12, Tógás tekergés (Toga Stroll) sends togas drifting through the old town. The Szélrózsa Lutheran Youth Meeting (15th edition) follows July 13–17, bringing thousands for worship, talks, and music.
Sopron gets into its quiz era mid-month: July 14 brings Könyvklub Kvíz #2 on Harry Potter és a titkok kamrája (Chamber of Secrets), July 15 is a Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix quiz, and July 16 turns to DreamWorks for an animated head-to-head. July 18 is packed: an open-air screening of Szenvedélyes nők (Passionate Women), the Brennberg Cooking Contest and Family Day, a medieval secrets walk titled A kecske, a medve, a majom és társaik (The Goat, the Bear, the Monkey and Others), a free Óriások vállán (On the Shoulders of Giants) city tour tracking famous Sopron families, and an Alexandra book fair. On July 19, the Kelta Fesztivál (Celtic Festival) thumps in. July 20–24, a creative summer camp runs for ages 6–12 at Felhő. July 25 brings Strandok éjszakája (Night of the Pools) at the Lőver swimming complex, the first Kapocsfesztivál, and another free Giants city tour. Two themed kids’ camps follow July 27–31: a Mindent bele museum camp and a DIÓTÖRŐ (Nutcracker) multi-arts summer camp.
August: Costume walks, stargazing, beer nights
August opens on the 1st with Barokk barangolás (Baroque Ramble) in the old town—another costumed guided walk—and a free Giants tour. From August 3–7, Gokart Tábor returns, alongside the Shotokan Tigers summer camp for ages 5–12. The Giants tour repeats August 8. August 10–14 launches A fehér bolygó lakói (Inhabitants of the White Planet), a supersonic, architecture-themed camp for kids 6–12. Mid-month (August 15) gets busy: a Giants tour, a Csillaghullás túra (Shooting Star Hike), a Fények és árnyak Sopron utcáin borozgatással (Lights and Shadows on Sopron’s Streets with Wine) guided walk, and a 13th Birthday Hike. August 20 highlights Egy koronázóváros titkai (Secrets of a Coronation City) walk. Soproni Sörnapok (Beer Days) bubbles up August 21–22, with another Giants tour August 22 and again on August 29.
September: Wine beats, harvest, climbs, comedy
VinoBeats hits September 4–6 under the slogan Zenével dűlőre jutunk! (We’ll settle it among the rows with music), blending vineyard grooves and tastings. A free Giants tour runs September 5. The Őszi börze (Autumn Fair) takes over GYIK-BAN on September 6. From September 11–13, Soproni Szüreti Napok (Harvest Days) pours into the city, with more Giants tours and a Bécsi külváros (Vienna Suburb) heritage walk on September 12. Hikers test themselves on the Sopron lookout towers trail September 12. The Lővér campsite hosts a Majka concert September 18, while Boogie Woogie és Blues Est brings vintage swing the same night, with tickets from about $18.70 to $21.40. September 19 stacks a Giants tour and a Széchényiek és Széchenyiek nyomában (Tracing the Széchényi and Széchenyi Families) walk. Crime buffs get Emberi bestiák – Bepillantás a sorozatgyilkosok világába (Human Beasts – Inside the World of Serial Killers) with Doszpot Péter and Antal Gábor on September 20. Stand-up lands September 23: Add tovább! (Pass It On!) by Kovács András Péter with opener Fehér Boldizsár at Dumaszínház, Liszt Center, Széchenyi Hall—tickets from about $22.50 to $28.10. Autumn runs, music, and city lore
October 3 doubles the Giants tours and hosts the MVM Sopron Half Marathon – Europe Run 2026. Crescendo’s season opener Harry Potter és Újvilág (Harry Potter and New World) lights up October 7. Giants tours repeat October 10 and 17. On October 23, Liszt Ferenc és a zene nyomában (In the Footsteps of Liszt and Music) maps the composer across the city. October 24 adds another Giants tour. October 28 brings Ónlakodalom (Tin Wedding) – Lakatos László’s 10-year best-of with opener Oliver Wolf at Dumaszínház, Liszt Center; tickets from roughly $18.70 to $21.40. Pál Feri’s new talk, Életerő, életöröm – Kiút az érzelmi kifáradásból (Vitality, Joy – The Way Out of Emotional Burnout) lands October 29. A Halloween-weekend Giants tour closes October 31.
November to New Year’s Eve: Concerts, illusions, Advent
Brahms: Sextet arrives with Crescendo on November 4. Giants tours continue November 7 and 14, paired that day with another medieval secrets walk. On November 8, Zerkovitz–Topolcsányi: Orfeum hercegnő (Princess of the Orpheum) plays at GYIK Rendezvényház, tickets about $14.40 to $18.40. The Illúzió Mesterei (Masters of Illusion) hit town November 14. November 21 adds another Giants tour. On November 22, Otthont! Házat! Hazát! (Home! House! Homeland!) honors the 70th anniversary of the 1956 revolution with a dance-theater performance. November 28 offers both a Giants tour and an Adventi séta forraltborozással (Advent Walk with Mulled Wine). December layers on Giants tours December 5 and 12; the Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra performs December 6. On December 12, Magyarok maradtunk! (We Remained Hungarians) is a thematic walk. December 19 pairs a Giants tour with more city lore, and December 30 welcomes blues legend Deák Bill Gyula with the Rossz vér (Bad Blood) tour. Close the year on December 31 with Pezsgő(s) római élet (Bubbly Roman Life) thematic walk and Soproni Szilveszter 2026.
Where to stay
Choices range from green Lőver district guesthouses near the pool to old-town panziós a short stroll from landmarks. For panoramas and local terroir, sip Kékfrankos, rosé, rich reds, and aromatic whites on a winery terrace.
