Sopron is rolling out guaranteed themed city walks with guides through late 2025, inviting you to explore the “loyal city’s” secrets, wander its cobbled historic quarters, and discover its story-filled gateways and varied sights. It’s an experience-packed city outing for the whole family, with old-town vibes and plenty of detours for food, wine, and play. Base yourself close to the action, then step straight into Advent lights, Roman lore, and the city’s identity-shaping history—all on foot.
When To Go
Three headline walks anchor the season. On 2025.11.29, the Advent Walk with mulled wine sets the mood in Sopron, blending festive streets with steaming cups along the way. On 2025.12.13, Magyarok maradtunk (We Stayed Hungarian) digs into the city’s defining moments and resilience. Then on 2025.12.30, Pezsgő(s) római élet (Sparkling Roman Life) takes you into the Roman past—with a bubbly twist to toast the year’s end. The organizers reserve the right to change dates and programs, so keep an eye out for updates.
Where To Stay
Adorján Guesthouse (Adorján Vendégház) spreads over two levels with seven rooms (singles, doubles, triples), part of a family-run setup that hosts up to 32 guests in total. It’s a quiet, green Lővérek location near the pool, and the inner city is just a 10-minute walk—easy for day walks and night returns.
The Alpokalja Guesthouse (Alpokalja Vendégház) sits in a calm corner of Sopron about a 20-minute stroll from the historic core—ideal if you want a soft landing but still be within reach of the old town.
Alsó-Lővér Apartment (AlsóLővér Apartman) offers one double apartment with a French bed, kitchenette, and bathroom, plus a four-person option with a French-bed bedroom, a living corner, a bath, and a fully equipped kitchen. Newly set up in Alsó-Lővérek with a family feel, the rooms are fitted out for self-catering and total comfort.
Anita Apartment Sopron (Anita Apartman Sopron) puts you by Hungary’s western border at the foot of the Alps, about 37 miles from Vienna. Pick from multiple apartments and settle in for city days and cross-border getaways.
In Lővérek—one of the city’s prettiest neighborhoods—the local pension places you 15 minutes on foot from the center, with trailheads just a short walk away. Lower Austria’s ski resorts are roughly 37 miles from Sopron, offering solid slopes and plenty of slope-side hospitality.
Close to the historic heart, Átrium’s young team welcomes you just minutes from the old town—perfect if you want shops, sights, and cafés right outside your door.
Bastion Guesthouse (Bástya Panzió) takes its name and location from Sopron’s more than 700-year-old outer city walls, right beside a small bastion. The two-story hotel rises on the slope of Coronation Hill (Koronázó-domb) at the corner of Vienna Street (Bécsi utca) and Stream Street (Patak utca), near the gate toward Vienna—a calm base in the city center.
Prefer central but quiet? A downtown apartment house sits about 150 meters from the old town. Easy car access, modern units, and a classic Sopron address in one of Hungary’s oldest—and arguably most beautiful—cities.
Downtown Guesthouse Sopron (Belvárosi Vendégház Sopron) mixes a family apartment with two separate triple beds and a fully equipped kitchen, a triple guest room, and a two-person studio apartment. Every unit comes with its own bathroom setup—handy for groups and families.
Eat, Drink, Play
Sopron’s newest beer garden leans into cozy vibes, quality specials, and frequent programs. There’s always a reason to drop in—and more reasons to linger.
Board-game fans, start here: a game café with more than 200 titles and a constantly growing shelf, whether you’re after a quick party round or a heavyweight strategy session. The team helps with first-game intros and rules, backed by a broad drinks menu.
Coffee Clinic pours serious-quality coffee with bonus breakfast and brunch options: sandwiches, classic breakfast plates, sweet pastries, and vegan desserts, plus a terrace for sunny sips.
Diána Guesthouse (Diána Panzió) welcomes you in the heart of Lővérek, near resort hotels and the State Sanatorium. Rooms are high standard, and an attended parking lot keeps your car safe while you unwind.
White Rose Restaurant and Inn (Fehér Rózsa Étterem és Fogadó) serves homestyle Hungarian comfort with friendly, fast service—exactly what you want after a cold-weather walk.
Wine lovers can climb for a tasting with a view: whether it’s a Sopron Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) or an easygoing rosé, a structured red or a juicy white, you’ll likely find a new favorite while gazing over vineyards and hills.
On 34 Matthias Corvinus Street (Mátyás Király utca 34), a family-style restaurant specializes in pizza in three sizes with endless combinations, plus a wide lineup of fresh mains. Dine in, order delivery, and let Fortuna’s spirit do the rest.
A family winery cultivates nine hectares, with a strong red focus since the early days and crisp whites for easy food pairing. Tastings run deep—pair them with lunch or dinner on request, with options like oven-roasted crispy pork and traditional dishes. They host everything from friendly gatherings to company dinners, business meetings, and press conferences. Join a cellar tour, a wine trek, or a wine dinner, and shop your favorites at cellar prices afterward.
There’s a wine bar with a legend: visitors who once came to the Lővérek for healing and ducked into the spot—then called Cellar Wine Bar (Pinceborozó)—left cured. Today the bar spans nearly 3,230 square feet across three rooms and still pours the good stuff.
And for a sweet finish, Harrer brings a storied Austrian confectioner’s name to life in Sopron. Karl Harrer’s long-time dream—craft chocolate—turns into glossy pralines, cakes, and everything cocoa your post-walk heart desires.
Plan The Perfect Day
Book a themed walk, then weave in a tasting, a brunch, a board-game break, and a twilight beer-garden detour. Sleep in Lővérek’s pines or a few doorways from the old town’s gates. Cobblestones, archways, mulled wine, Roman sparkle, and history that sticks—Sopron makes it easy to roam, sip, and stay. Dates and programs may change, so check again before you lace up.
