where: 4400 Nyíregyháza, Skanzen utca 8.

Dive into Hungary’s largest regional open-air ethnographic museum, where the Sóstó Museum Village (Sóstói Múzeumfalu) in Nyíregyháza drops you straight into village life from 150 years ago. Workshops, themed days, and living history bring everyday life from the Árpád era to life—hands-on, not behind glass.

Every Sunday: Felting in the Szabó Workshop

On November 23 and November 30, Sunday felting sessions return, and you take your finished masterpiece home. Trying any craft costs 5 Bankó. The Bankó is the museum’s own currency, sold at the ticket office for 100 HUF each, roughly 0.27 USD per Bankó.

Tuesdays: Weaving Workshops

On November 25, and every Tuesday, learn traditional weaving inside the village’s period interiors. No performance—just the rhythm of the loom and a friendly guide to keep you from tangling threads.

Fridays: Scented Sachets and Herbal Tea Tastings

On November 28, sew scented sachets and taste soothing herbal teas. You keep your masterpiece. Like all crafts, it’s a flat 5 Bankó, purchased for about 0.27 USD per Bankó at the gate.

Saturdays: Free Guided Tours

Starting November 29, free guided tours run every Saturday at 10:30 and 14:00. Wander farmsteads and workshops while hearing why a village oven was the warm heart of winter.

Saturdays: Leathercraft Sessions

Also on November 29 and every Saturday, leathercraft workshops help you cut, stitch, and emboss. Your handiwork goes home with you; the fee is 5 Bankó (buy each for around 0.27 USD).

December 1–12: Traveling Museum Visits Schools

From December 1–12, the museum goes on the road. Book a visit and they’ll show up with a suitcase of traditions: local customs tied to major name days (think Andrew and Lucy—András, Luca), pig-slaughter masking, weather-forecasting rhymes, witches, superstitions, beliefs, and old-school magic. Register: muzeumpedagogia@muzeumfalu.hu.

December 13: Advent Warm-Up Morning

Saturday, December 13, 9:00–13:00. Fee: about 4.83 USD/person (1,800 HUF). Registration required by December 8. The village lights up on the eve of the Third Sunday of Advent: shared making, warmth, old-time atmosphere, and a touch of nativity play. Create decorations for the holiday table, slip into heated farmhouses, and experience The Little Jesus Golden Apple (A kis Jézus aranyalma) with the Nyíregyháza Dance School (Nyíregyházi Tánctanoda). By the ovens, craft the centerpieces: you’ll dip candles, shape angels, carve ornaments, and cook szaloncukor. Then soak up the classic nativity play (betlehemezés) spirit—the real Christmas magic. Register: muzeumpedagogia@muzeumfalu.hu.
