What’s On

From December 8 to 12, and again on December 16, the stage alternates two crowd-pleasers: A nagy jetinyomozás (The Great Yeti Investigation) and Csipkerózsika – éber álom – játék – opera (Sleeping Beauty – waking dream – play – opera). Both return across multiple days to keep the holiday buzz going.

Special Guests

The next day, December 21, Aranygyapjú Társulat brings Az ég legfényesebb csillaga (The Brightest Star in the Sky), closing the Advent program on a luminous note.

Pros
+
Family-friendly lineup with classic tales and gentle mysteries that work great for kids and mixed-age groups
+
Multiple show dates across Advent make it easy to fit into a December itinerary
+
Puppet theatre is a unique, cozy holiday experience you might not get at home, especially with an opera/puppet mashup like Sleeping Beauty
+
Szeged is a charming, safe university city with a festive vibe in December—nice add-on to a Budapest trip
+
Tickets for puppet theatres in Hungary are usually affordable, making this a budget-friendly cultural stop
+
Central city venue means you can reach it easily by tram, bus, or taxi; driving and parking in Szeged are manageable
+
Exposure to Hungarian holiday traditions and guest troupes gives you a deeper cultural snapshot than touristy Christmas markets - Shows are primarily in Hungarian, so non-speakers may miss nuances unless visuals carry the story for kids
Cons
Szeged and the Kövér Béla Puppet Theatre aren’t internationally famous, so it may not feel “bucket list” to U.S. travelers
Compared to big Christmas spectacles in Vienna or German cities, production scale may be more intimate than wow-factor
Date changes are possible, so tight schedules could get thrown off without checking updates frequently
