Where to stay: wine hotels and smart city bases
Hotel Merops**** is a wine hotel in downtown Szekszárd, right by the Mészáros Wine House (Mészáros Pincészet) and just a short stroll from the center. It blends small-city calm with the atmosphere of a storied wine region, hitting the sweet spot for travelers seeking either total relaxation or active breaks. Expect distinctive interiors, a skilled staff, and tailored, wide-ranging services designed for comfort and character.
Eight rooms and two apartments make it an intimate base for visitors, and the team can plug you into a raft of gastronomic programs around town and in the countryside. The Main Street Bistro inside the Nádasdi House woos locals and travelers with a broad menu and refined plates. Wine tastings are on the calendar too, and the cellar hosts events steeped in Szekszárd style—birthdays, friendly dinners, or corporate gatherings that actually feel special.
Motels and modern classics
Sió Motel sits at Szekszárd’s northern gateway along Route 6, between the Szekszárd and Tolna wine regions, close to the Gemenc Forest and the Sárköz area, spread across 2.5 hectares. Hotel Zodiaco***, the only three-star hotel in and around Szekszárd, is all about modern-elegant vibes and guest satisfaction. It keeps evolving with new ideas each year so business trips and weekend getaways feel effortless and upgraded.
Vineyards that define the region
Attila Estate (Attila Birtok) in the Baranya Valley spans 14 hectares, working with Kékfrankos, Kadarka, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zweigelt. The kitchen is built on harmony between food and Bodri wines—chef Norbert Makk puts the spotlight on classic Hungarian cuisine, refreshed and modernized without losing its soul.
Bodri Winery (Bodri Pincészet) is a 100-hectare operation and a full-on visitor magnet: winery, events center, restaurant with show kitchen, and guesthouses, all in a picturesque valley on the city’s southern edge. Its 19,375-square-foot main cellar unfolds under twelve domes, while a 3,229-square-foot aging cellar opens on guided tours. The 15,069-square-foot rosé facility turns out larger volumes of high-quality wine. The estate’s tastefully designed rooms sleep 61 people at once, and a subterranean Roman-style thermal bath, jacuzzi, and sauna add restorative sparkle. The Optimus Restaurant showcases the many colors of Hungarian cooking, tuned to today.
Cellars with character
Borfaragó Cellar (Borfaragó Pince), in the heart of the old “upper town,” occupies a former carpentry and woodcarving workshop, pairing tasting programs and artisanal wines with folk woodcarving gems. It’s discreet, easy to reach, and a solid pick for friends or colleagues who want to gather off the main drag.
On Várdomb Hill (Várdomb), the estate center champions Kékfrankos for its versatility, quality, and reliability, using it both solo and as a backbone for blends. They also make room for Rhine Riesling, Cserszegi fűszeres, Kadarka, Kékoportó (Portugieser), Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah, treating each with care.
Craft, purity, and experiment
A craft winery in Szekszárd, largely rooted in the Porkoláb Valley, works only its own grapes and rejects industrial shortcuts: no commercial yeasts, malolactic cultures, enzymes, fining agents, colorants, flavor or aroma tweaks, acid adjustment, filtration, sterilization, oxygen dosing, or heat treatments. Every wine is bottled unfiltered. Another cellar leans into the local DNA but loves to experiment, trying new blends with each vintage. Nearly every red grape becomes a rosé as well, a strategy that’s won serious international medals. The reds remain a point of pride, anchored in Kékfrankos and Kadarka, rounded out with Merlot, Cabernet, and Pinot Noir, while preserving Szekszárd’s signature taste.
Tradition, hospitality, and family stories
Eszterbauer, a family winery with Swabian and Serbian roots, keeps tradition alive with tastings presented by family members in a showcase wine house and see-through cellar. The wine-and-guest house hosts tasting sessions and meals for groups from 8 to 50, from simple bites to multi-course dinners. Their webshop carries award-winners for home enjoyment. Another family estate farms 6.6 hectares across four parts of the Szekszárd region, focusing on Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Kékfrankos. If you want something different, unplug on the vineyard hill, lean back, and let the wines do the talking.
