Szentendre’s Jewish House (Zsidóház) doubles as a synagogue and a buzzing community hub, blending religious life with cultural events and lifestyle programming. It brings together every strand of Jewish learning, food, tradition, and conversation under one welcoming roof—often literally, in the host’s own kitchen.

January: Ecology, Cooking, and Community Baking

January 15, 6:30 p.m. – Jewish Ecology. The salon kicks off with the line: “Every person is a world—if a good community comes together, we can see a world together.” The series exists for sharing curiosities from our lives, interests, and professions. Guest speaker: Dr. András Kovács, chemical engineer. Location: Szentendre.

January 18, 4:00 p.m. – Cooking and Philosophy. Did you know the brain burns 20–25% of the body’s energy? Feed the mind, and let the body dine well. This themed workshop aims higher than kitchen wizardry—it starts with spirit, then rolls up sleeves. Most of the time is hands-on cooking, but each session opens with a short learning “starter” that frames the menu. Introductory learning by Rebbetzin Tzivia Myers. Workshop led by chef Balázs Sepsi. Register online and pay on site. Registration fee: 5000 HUF (about 13.75 USD). Location: Szentendre.

January 22 – January Community Baking in Szentendre. Food tastes best when made with love—especially for festive meals. Every week brings a celebration: Shabbat is a Friday-night constant. Rebbetzin Tzivia turns not only dinner but the cooking itself into a communal experience in her closely guarded home kitchen. Meet there Thursday, bake the next day’s treats together, then taste on Friday why it truly hits the spot. Location: Szentendre.

January 29 – 50 Years in Hospitality. The salon returns to its sharing spirit with guest Péter Havas, former head of catering at the SYMA Event Center, bringing half a century of stories and insights. Location: Szentendre.

February: Tapas, More Baking, and Pre-Holiday Crafting

February 15 – Tapas & Company. The brain-energy mantra returns: nurture mind and body. Expect another thematic cooking class where philosophy leads and the stove follows. Short learning by Rebbetzin Tzivia Myers; workshop by chef Balázs Sepsi. Register and pay on site. Registration fee: 5000 HUF (about 13.75 USD). Location: Szentendre.

Pros
+
Family-friendly vibe: hands-on cooking, crafts, and community baking make it easy to bring kids or teens, with low prices and welcoming hosts
+
Topic is approachable: Jewish culture, food, and Shabbat traditions are widely recognized internationally, so you won’t feel lost
+
Szentendre is a known day-trip from Budapest for foreign visitors, with a charming old town and extra markets, theater, and even a Harry Potter exhibition to round out your visit
+
Little to no Hungarian needed: hosts use plenty of English-friendly cues, and cooking/crafts are easy to follow; many locals in Szentendre speak some English
+
Easy access: frequent suburban HÉV train from Budapest + short walk, or simple 30–40 min drive; parking is generally manageable outside peak festival hours
+
Great value: workshops around $14 and lots of free/low-cost events compared to similar cultural programs in Western Europe or the U.S.
+
Compared to similar Jewish cultural hubs abroad, this one feels intimate and home-based (host’s kitchen!), giving a more personal, less “museum-y” experience
Cons
Family-friendliness can vary: small home-kitchen setting may have limited space, hot ovens, and few kid-specific amenities
International name recognition is modest: Szentendre’s Jewish House isn’t famous globally, so expectations should be small-scale rather than blockbuster
Some events and performances in town are Hungarian-only, which could limit theater/lecture options if you don’t speak the language
HÉV trains can be crowded on weekends, and schedules thin late at night; driving into Szentendre’s core can be tight during big market days
