The Tiszavirág Festival lights up Szolnok again from Tuesday, June 16 to Saturday, June 20, 2026. It’s a cult favorite with a community vibe, beloved across generations, and it’s free. The largest open cultural carnival in Central Hungary brings discerning music and quality wines, spiced with a dash of theater, legendary films, and a bustling craft fair across multiple venues. The festival’s namesake is the rare, spectacular mayfly swarming known as the Tisza bloom, which, with luck, can be seen along the city’s central riverside stretch.
The 2026 edition spreads out across several downtown and riverside spots, drawing locals and travelers for five days of concerts, tastings, screenings, and street life. Expect a mix of international and Hungarian acts, wine regions pouring by the glass, and artisan makers setting up along the Tisza embankment. The atmosphere leans toward relaxed daytime strolling and full-tilt evenings—bring curiosity and comfortable shoes.
When and where
Dates: June 16–20, 2026. City: Szolnok. The festival is outdoors across multiple venues along the Tisza and in the city center. Entry is free. Organizers reserve the right to change dates and programs.
Music, films, theater, and crafts
This is the festival to drift between riverside stages, wine terraces, and film screens as the sun dips and the Tisza glows. Expect quality music across genres, with room for jazz, indie, and world sounds. Legendary films anchor outdoor screenings, while small theater pop-ups bring intimate shows to tucked-away courtyards. A craft market stretches along key pedestrian arteries: handmade ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and regional specialties are all part of the browse-and-buy ritual. Wine stands deliver serious bottles by the glass, while street food vendors pair them with Hungarian staples and modern twists.
Catch the Tisza bloom
If nature cooperates, the river’s famed mayfly swarming—the Tiszavirág—unfurls at dusk along the inner-city riverbank. It’s a brief, ethereal window when millions of insects rise, mate, and vanish. Locals and visitors gather quietly, cameras ready, as the water lifts into motion. It’s unpredictable and weather-dependent, but when it happens, it’s unforgettable.
Where to stay
Accommodation options span riverside calm to business-class convenience. On Szolnok’s Alcsisziget, guesthouses sit on the backwater Holt-Tisza with private docks—ideal for anglers and families, and swimmable in summer. In downtown Szolnok, Business Hotel Semiramis is a few steps from the Tisza, offering professional services for business travelers who want a short walk to the festival action.
At the edge of the city, the Forest Education Center (Erdei Művelődési Ház) serves as a regional hub for environmental education, a base for discoveries that often leave even local kids and teachers marveling: Feels like we’re somewhere else entirely! In green Tiszaliget, Garden Hotel Wellness & Conference delivers high-standard service, elegant rooms, conference halls, a solid restaurant, and a full wellness wing—good for decompressing between shows.
Hozam Wellness & Apartment sits on a quiet street near the Tisza with 17 rooms and a small wellness area, welcoming solo and business travelers with a family feel. Millér Guesthouse & Leisure Park (Millér Panzió és Szabadidőpark) occupies leafy grounds bordered by the Tisza and the Millér main channel, five minutes’ drive from the city center.
For groups and families, the Tourism and Leisure Center (Turisztikai és Szabadidőközpont) at the far end of Tiszaliget is the Great Hungarian Plain’s largest youth camp, with 320 beds across 16 fenced hectares—an ideal launchpad for cycling and water tours, school trips, and family getaways. Nearby, Tiszaliget Apartment & Hostel (Tiszaliget Apartman, Szálló) offers direct access to the Liget Thermal Beach, free basketball and football courts for all ages, and a quick hop to the center via the Tiszavirág Bridge. It’s also a handy spot for group stays and kids’ camps.
If you prefer flexible stays, Tiszaliget Motel & Camping provides motel rooms plus a campground with fully equipped bungalows, caravan bays, and tent sites. Expect a thermal beach, sports options, bike rentals, and playgrounds for active downtime.
Eat and drink
Dining ranges from riverside bistros to classic pubs and patisseries. A snug bistro sits right on the Tisza, where the chef pairs local-producer ingredients with guest favorites so everyone lands the right plate. In the cellar, a 150 m2 English-style pub radiates Anglo-Saxon charm with air conditioning and a separable room for banquets, business meetings, receptions, or reunions. Next door: a quintessentially Hungarian, vaulted cellar restaurant with moody lighting and cozy tables.
At Cafe Frei, guests can taste the world—coffees, cakes, hot chocolates, wellness drinks, teas, and house-made specialties from five continents. Drinks use freshly roasted, hand-sorted Arabica rarities, and there are about seventy coffee varieties spanning all the major coffee cuisines: Italian, French, Japanese, Arab, American, and Latin American.
In Tiszaliget, the Campus houses the Campus Restaurant (Campus Étterem): a bright atrium that can host proms, weddings, balls, exhibitions, and product launches for up to 300 people, while the restaurant itself seats around 120.
Traditionalists will find daily menus, Hungarian classics, and international specialties at venues sized for 100-person weddings, banquets, conferences, or private and corporate gatherings, plus a 10–12-person private room for discreet meetings. Off-site catering is available for events of various sizes.
Sweet tooth alert: a patisserie rolls out freshly made sweet minis, savory bites, sliced cakes, and multi-tiered tortes—from wedding and sculpted to timeless classics—plus house-made Italian artisan gelato in warm weather.
Gallery-style dining spreads across three levels: a ground-floor restaurant, first-floor café, a 160 m2 private room upstairs, and a 20–30-person cellar. In late spring and summer, a garden patio opens—great for both family and corporate events.
Right on the Tisza in downtown Szolnok, Halászcsárda Restaurant (Halászcsárda Étterem) serves homestyle Hungarian flavors in a family setting, with traditional fish dishes and plenty of hearty options. It’s a fit for family and friends’ gatherings, class reunions, business dinners, and even small weddings. Elsewhere, Hozam Hotel Restaurant (Hozam Hotel Étterem) continues its decades-long run of quality hospitality, events, and hotel services. Wine lovers can slip into Jazz Wine Restaurant (Jazz Borétterem) on Sóház Street.
