Szomolya rolls into 2026 with a full calendar of community traditions, national commemorations, and its showstopper, the Cherry Festival (Cseresznyefesztivál), celebrating the village’s pride and joy: the famed black cherry. Multiple venues across the 3411 Szomolya area will host events throughout the year, blending state, church, and secular highlights with local heritage programs. Visitors are invited to join and share in the region’s history, flavors, and hospitality.
March 15 Commemoration
The weekend opens with an official remembrance on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 17:00 on Liberty Square (Szabadság tér). The program features the mayor’s ceremonial address, a performance by the Szomolya Cherry Blossom Folk Song Circle (Szomolyai Cseresznyevirág Népdalkör), and a wreath-laying ceremony. The community bows its head to heroes whose courage and love of country set an example for future generations. “Please stand with us and remember our nation’s glorious history together,” organizers urge. The event embraces reflection, song, and quiet respect against the backdrop of spring fading into evening across the square in Szomolya.
Cherry Festival Returns
On June 6–7, 2026, the Cherry Festival (Cseresznyefesztivál) in Szomolya takes center stage again, bringing the national spotlight back to Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén’s most delectable celebrity: the black cherry. Expect tastings, farm stands, kitchen magic, and village pride in peak season. With multiple locations in and around the village, the festival spills across lanes and courtyards where local producers and families share what they grow, cook, and hold dear. It’s the weekend when Szomolya tastes like summer.
Stay by the Stream—or Underground
For those settling in, one option promises aristocratic comfort on the bank of the Kánya Stream (Kánya-patak). The building hosts two grand-bourgeois apartments with bright, spacious interiors and fully equipped kitchens—designed for lingering mornings and unhurried evenings.
Prefer something rare? Just 9.3 miles from Eger, at the foot of the Bükk Mountains, a one-hectare site offers three cave houses with 4-, 6-, and 9-bed apartments. Each comes with a bathroom, WC, hot water, underfloor heating, and a fully equipped kitchen. Every yard has its own terrace plus separate spaces for grilling and kettle cooking, so nights can end under the stars with something sizzling and a bottle breathing on the table.
Wine Country, Family-Run
Szomolya sits on the eastern side of the Eger Wine Region, and you can taste it in the glass. One family winery, founded by the Nagy family in 2001, welcomes guests with good wines and an easygoing mood among beehive stones and black cherry orchards. Vineyard care, processing, and sales stay under family supervision, keeping the craft tight and personal. Another family cellar calls the area one of the best growing sites—really, one of the best places to live in the Carpathian Basin—“the Creator’s palm.” It’s romantic, sure, but stand in the vineyards at dusk and try to argue.
Cellar Tours and Feasts
Year-round, by prior arrangement, wineries offer cellar visits with tastings. Expect bread-and-wine pairings, oven-baked wine gastronomy, a full spectacle of traditional pig fattening and processing, and sprawling, unlimited food-and-drink menus that roll into dinner shows pouring the Eger region’s finest. Bring your appetite—and the willingness to stay a little longer than planned.
