Szomolya rolls into 2025 with a full slate of community traditions — state, church, and secular red-letter days all get a proper nod with heritage programs. The village’s nationwide headliner, the Cseresznyefesztivál (Cherry Festival), returns with its pride and joy, the glossy black cherry. Expect the Kisasszonynapi Búcsú (Feast of Our Lady) and the Harvest Celebration, too. And don’t skip the evergreens: the kaptárkő (beehive rock) nature trail, the lookout, the folk house, the village museum, and the rececsipke (lace) exhibition.

Stay in style
Riverside ease on the Kánya Stream: two grand-bourgeois apartments with bright, spacious rooms and fully equipped kitchens. For something unique, three cave houses on a 2.47-acre plot 9.3 miles from Eger, at the foot of the Bükk Mountains. Apartments sleep 4, 6, and 9, each with a bathroom, toilet, hot water, underfloor heating, and an equipped kitchen. Every yard has its own terrace, plus grilling and cauldron-cooking options.
Wine country soul
Sip fine wines where the kaptárkövek (beehive rocks) stand and black cherries thrive. The Nagy family’s winery, founded in 2001, sits in the eastern Egri Wine Region in Szomolya, with most vineyards nearby and every step — from tending vines to sales — handled in-house. Another family cellar here boasts top terroir — a slice of the Carpathian Basin they call the Creator’s palm. Year-round cellar tours with tastings by appointment: wine flights, oven-fired food pairings, traditional hog-slaughter experiences, hearty snacks, all-you-can-eat-and-drink spreads, and dinner shows with the region’s best bottles.
