Szomolya is rolling out a full calendar for 2025–2026, inviting everyone to gather for state, church, and secular red-letter days with proudly traditional flair. The village leans into its heritage with events that celebrate local flavors, rituals, and landscapes—topped by its nationally famed Cherry Festival (Cseresznyefesztivál), starring the pride of Szomolya: the black cherry. Expect the Feast of the Assumption Fair (Kisasszonynapi Búcsú) and the Harvest Festival to return as well, along with a steady lineup of permanent attractions. The Bee-Hive Stone (Kaptárkő) nature trail, the hilltop lookout, the village skanzen-style house, the local museum, and the delicate rececsipke lace exhibition are all must-sees.
December 2025: Community, Craft, Celebration
Mark the dates. On December 13, 2025, the village hosts Christmas for Seniors (Idősek Karácsonya), a warm, community celebration in Szomolya. On December 21, the Christmas Tree Decorating Competition fills the town with sparkle and friendly rivalry. And on December 31, New Year’s Eve (Szilveszter) caps the year in true village style. Each gathering is about shared tables, familiar faces, and keeping traditions vivid and inviting for all generations.
June 2026: The Black Cherry Takes the Stage
On June 6–7, 2026, Szomolya erupts into cherry-red joy with the Szomolya Cherry Festival (Cseresznyefesztivál Szomolya). This is the village’s signature event, known nationwide, celebrating the black cherry that thrives in the microclimate of the Bükk foothills. Expect tastings, music, artisan stalls, and local gastronomy built around the fruit that defines the village’s identity. It’s both a harvest celebration and a love letter to traditions that keep Szomolya firmly on Hungary’s festival map.
Where to Stay: Noble Comfort by the Stream
Looking for a base? Along the Kánya Stream, a stately property offers two spacious, sunlit apartments in grand bourgeois style, each with a fully equipped kitchen. It’s designed for ease: elegant interiors, modern comforts, and a setting that feels worlds away yet steps from the village’s pulse.
Sleep in Stone: Cave Houses of the Bükk
About 9.3 miles from Eger, at the foot of the Bükk Mountains, a one-hectare enclave hosts three cave houses—apartments with 4, 6, and 9 beds. All feature bathrooms, toilets, hot water, underfloor heating, and equipped kitchens. Each yard offers its own terrace and dedicated grilling and cauldron-cooking spots, so your group can spread out, sizzle, and settle in under the trees.
Wine Country, Family Style
Raise a glass in the village of bee-hive stones (kaptárkövek) and black cherries. The Nagy family’s winery, founded in 2001, anchors itself on the eastern side of the Eger Wine Region, with its cellar and most vineyards in Szomolya. Vineyard care, grape processing, and sales all stay under family supervision. Another family-run cellar touts its enviable terroir—one of the best in the Eger region and, as they like to say, among the finest in the Carpathian Basin: the Creator’s palm, as locals put it.
Cellar Visits and Feasts
Year-round, book ahead for cellar tours with tastings. Think wood-fired oven dishes, charcuterie, showpiece pig-slaughtering programs, and unlimited food and drink packages. Some evenings turn into full-blooded dinner shows, pairing regional flavors with standout bottles from the Eger wine region. It’s convivial, abundant, and unmistakably Szomolya.
