Shaded by leafy canopies, Gyula’s bustling market square offers a warm, family-like vibe that draws locals and visitors alike, all searching for the region’s best homemade goods. Here, you’ll find a tempting array: cheeses, fresh vegetables and fruits, honey, jams, and everything from rich cow’s milk dairy products to house-made sausages and ham. On Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, the selection is impressively abundant, making it a true paradise for food lovers.
Market Days and Local Treasures
Be sure to stop by the Gyula Market and Market Hall at 5700 Gyula, Október 6. tér (October 6th Square). The town’s historic spa atmosphere only adds to the charm as local producers showcase their finest sausages, cheeses, honey, fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, and beautifully presented jams. Market events are held regularly, specifically on October 26, 28, and 31, and November 2, 4, and 7, so there’s always something fresh to enjoy.
Historic Café and Gift Shop
Right next to the Gyula Almásy Castle Visitor Center café, you’ll find a stylish museum gift shop staffed with friendly faces—open from 10 am to 6 pm, closed on Mondays. Don’t miss the legendary Százéves Confectionery (Százéves Cukrászda), Hungary’s second-oldest confectionery, operating since 1840. Its ornate building and original furniture transport you back to the vibrant coffeehouse era, sweetening your visit with traditional cakes, parfaits, candies, and ice creams. A complete restoration in 2004 ensures it remains a sparkling gem of Southern Hungary, offering a unique experience for every guest.
