Every July, the quiet Hungarian town of Gyula transforms into a full-fledged medieval festival. Around 200 historical reenactors fill the castle and its grounds each summer’s last weekend, reliving the fateful 1566 siege of Gyula. This was no ordinary standoff—the real-life battle pitted a 30,000-strong Ottoman force against just 2,000–2,500 defenders led by Commander László Kerecsényi. Visitors can wander through the colorful camps where these modern-day warriors sleep, eat, and celebrate just as their ancestors did under the Turkish threat. The siege dragged on for a staggering two months, from July 2 to September 2. The vastly outnumbered Hungarians finally surrendered only after running out of supplies and when a plague broke out, in exchange for safe passage. Although Kerecsényi’s surrender was branded treason at the time, historians now respect his decision to save his men. Today, both locals and thousands of event-goers pay tribute to these stubborn, doomed, and brave defenders. And when dusk falls, the air is filled with stories of heroism, resistance, and the harsh lives of both besiegers and the besieged.

The evening heats up at 7:30 PM with a grand opening, gun salute to the heroes, a street parade winding through the old-town squares, and Show&Bors Band lighting up the first night at 9:30 PM.
Saturday, July 26: Activities begin at 10 AM throughout the castle and town. Watch master blacksmiths at work, try your hand at swordplay, or discover the gritty truth about medieval jails and punishments—how long would you last? Falconry demonstrations and playful kids’ archery tournaments take place throughout the day. Culinary and cultural explorations let you taste and hear what even 150 years of Turkish rule could not erase from the Hungarian spirit.
At 6:30 PM, all eyes focus on the main event: the siege reenactment. Witness military history come alive as reenactor armies storm the fortress with authentic period tactics. If you’re still energized, dance the night away at the huge Follow the Flow concert at 9:30 PM.
Sunday, July 27: The final day goes all out for families—fencing workshops, hands-on weapon demonstrations, more escape room sessions, and craft villages running all day long. Kids can join knight apprenticeships, try “Pages vs. Marauders” (Apródok vs. martalócok) battles, or train with legendary archers. There’s live music everywhere, with Sonivius Vappae providing afternoon beats and Szikora Róbert & R-GO closing out the festivities with a show at 8:30 PM.

Beyond the main castle, events spill over into the surroundings: in the marshes, traditional thatched houses are built to recreate peasant life.
