Ever wondered how your favorite craft beers are made, or wanted a closer look behind the scenes of a modern Hungarian microbrewery? In Budapest, the doors of FIRST Craft Beer brewery (Első Kézműves Sörfőzde) swing open every week, giving you the chance to dive into the world of unique Hungarian brews—from raw ingredients all the way to your pint glass.

Behind the Brew: What to Expect

Sign up for a FIRST brewery tour and you’ll be guided by passionate staff who will walk you through the real art and science behind small-batch beer making. This is a no-compromises kind of place: you’ll see how top-quality ingredients meet innovative brewing processes, all built on a philosophy of quality over quantity. During the hour-long guided tour, you’ll peek into the daily hustle of the brewery team and get to know every step of beer creation, from selecting barley and hops to packaging the finished beer.

The tour doesn’t leave you dry—every guest is invited to a relaxed tasting right after, with four 6.75 oz (2 dl) beers on tap for you to sample. You can pick whichever brews spark your curiosity, and if beer isn’t your thing, you can swap a tasting for other drinks, including non-alcoholic options or cans to go.

How to Join In and What’s Included

Tours run four times a week: Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm, and Saturdays at 4 pm, 5:15 pm, and 6:30 pm. You can’t book a time until you’ve bought your ticket, but after purchase, you’ll receive an order number by email which lets you lock in your preferred slot. The ticket costs 6,490 forints (HUF) (around $17.80), including the full hour tour and your four-drink tasting flight.

On the day, be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes early. The taproom—connected directly to the brewery—stays open both before and after the tour, so you’re welcome to come early or hang around afterwards to continue your beer adventure or chat with other fans. While there’s no kitchen on site, you’re free to order food through delivery apps like Wolt or Foodora so you can eat while you sip.

The Story Behind FIRST Craft Beer

The brewery fired up its kettles in 2017, aiming to become one of Hungary’s leading microbreweries. This meant not only making more beer, but focusing on trendsetting, quality-driven brews in a constantly evolving lineup. Since brewmaster Máté Ábrahám joined in 2018, FIRST has released over 25 different new beers each year, most as unique one-off batches. Their mantra? Keep experimenting, pushing for new styles, new ingredients, and new ways of brewing.

This culture of innovation has secured FIRST’s place among Hungary’s craft beer elite. From hop-forward IPA classics to today’s trendiest sours, they continue to rack up awards and fans. But it’s more than just the brewing—the taproom in Újpest (New Pest) draws tens of thousands to brewery tours and tastings, all in the name of moving from gulping beer by the gallon to savoring distinctive pints with friends.

Eat, Stay, and Explore Nearby

If you’re making a weekend of it, there are plenty of places nearby to stay. Aquaworld Resort Budapest stands out with 309 rooms and direct access to one of Europe’s largest indoor waterparks—a unique combination of conference center, wellness spa, and aquatic adventure. For something more boutique, Vitta Hotel promises personalized, stylish rooms at affordable rates, while smaller local guesthouses in quiet Újpest (New Pest) side streets offer cozy apartments and even a two-lane bowling alley.

When hunger strikes, local restaurant options showcase both Hungarian tradition and international flair. Capri Pizzeria bakes thin, stone-fired pizzas using original Italian recipes. At Csülök Restaurant (Csülök Vendéglő), hearty stews, pork knuckles, and traditional dumplings await lovers of classic Hungarian cuisine, all in air-conditioned comfort. For lighter or health-conscious options, Kitchen Garden serves paleo, gluten- and lactose-free fare alongside aromatic teas, breakfasts, and salads. Meanwhile, historic inns like Megyeri Tavern (Megyeri Csárda) and riverside-style taverns blend Hungarian homestyle dishes with rustic charm.

Ready to Taste the Revolution?

FIRST Craft Beer isn’t just about drinking—it’s about experiencing Budapest’s modern beer revolution firsthand: learning, tasting, and taking home new favorite flavors. Whether you’re a die-hard beer enthusiast or a total newbie, this tour might just change how you think about everyone’s favorite bubbly beverage. Grab your ticket, lock in your tour, and raise a glass to a new side of Budapest.
