Tihany is rolling into late 2025 and early 2026 with a stacked calendar: exhibitions, concerts, theater, the beloved Lavender Festival, foodie pop-ups, and a slew of guaranteed and optional outdoor programs. On the Lake Balaton shore, visitors get a year-round cultural hit and a reason to roam. The Tihany Peninsula is a nature-and-heritage treasure chest—explore the village streets and trails within and beyond the town borders, and let the local events be your guide.
Highlights: December 8–14, 2025
Start with the glow: all week, a light ferry runs between Tihany and Szántód, turning a simple crossing into a winter spectacle. In the village, a new outdoor game tour invites families and friend groups to hunt for Tihany’s hidden gems—think team play, local lore, and a route through streets, squares, and historical buildings.
On December 12, Richárd Korzenszky OSB gives a talk in the cozy Attic Evenings (Tetőtéri esték) series in Tihany, drawing listeners into Benedictine wisdom and local spirit.
December 14 is all Advent: at 15:00, kids can “Decorate Your Own Cookie!” with a gingerbread styling workshop upstairs in the Granary (Magtár). At 16:00, an Advent musical devotion fills the Benedictine Abbey. At 17:30, the third Advent candle is lit on Ferenc Mádl Square (Mádl Ferenc tér) by notary Tamás Jurics and kindergarten head Judit Leidlné Szabó, with Tihany’s kindergarteners performing.
Advent Week Two: December 15–21
The treasure-hunt-style outdoor tour and the light ferry both continue through the week. December 20 brings a bejgli-making workshop—time to learn the secrets of Hungary’s classic holiday roll. From December 20 to January 4, Tihany Light Magic (Tihanyi fényvarázs) washes the town in festive illumination, turning lanes, landmarks, and viewpoints into a glowing winter postcard.
On December 21, the fourth Advent candle is lit at 17:00 on Ferenc Mádl Square (Mádl Ferenc tér) by Prior Jeromos Norbert Mihályi and Mrs. Zoltán Apró (Zoltánné Apró), with the Levendula Choir (Levendula Dalkör) adding harmonies. Expect mulled wine, tea, and gingerbread at the candle lightings; in bad weather, events move upstairs in the Granary (Magtár). Also on December 21, there’s a gingerbread workshop for kids.
Between the Holidays: December 22–28
The outdoor game tour and light ferry keep running. The week mixes family outings with quiet worship and a turntable throwback: on December 27, the Retro Xmas Disco with DJ Schneider takes over Tihany, while the Tihany Benedictine Abbey Church (Tihanyi Bencés Apátsági Templom) hosts a guitar-accompanied Holy Mass the same day, marking the eve of the Feast of the Holy Family.
Year-End Sparkle and New Year
From December 29 to 31, the light ferry shuttles late-night vibes across the water, while the outdoor game tour runs from December 29 to January 4. New Year’s Eve brings New Year’s Above Lake Balaton (Szilveszter a Balaton felett)—celebrations perched above the lake, where fireworks meet panorama. The light ferry resumes January 1–4, then continues January 5–31, 2026, for a full month of luminous crossings.
More Dates and Notes
Extra listings flag December 12’s Attic Evenings (Tetőtéri esték) in Porta Pacis with Richárd Korzenszky OSB, a December 14 Advent musical devotion, and further programming through January 18. A separate round-up highlights Balaton-wide programs running through 2025.
